It's a well known fact that pornography on YouTube is strictly forbidden, with the exception of educational and "art house" type movies being the (for investigative purposes researched!) exception to the rule, and even then, you must be logged in, confirmed to be over 18 and have the "family filter" disabled to view them.
YouTube uses an algorithm for uploaded content as a first defense, with other levels relying on user reports for any breaches of this rule. However, it would appear that the Irish (Gaelic) language wasn't included in those filters, as one YouTube user, using an Asian woman for an avatar discovered. The user was able to upload at least twenty pornographic videos that went unmonitored for "months" before being reported and pulled.
According to an Irish language journalist, Maitiú Ó Coimín of the Tuairisc news site, the uploader of the videos wasn't exactly fluent in the Irish language, he told the BBC upon discovering them:
It's not actually good Irish; it's just random words translated. The grammar and syntax is awful, it looks like it has gone through Google Translate. I would say there are many other languages being used like this and that it's just that we were looking up Irish words that we found it.
Needless to say the videos were quickly pulled for violating several usage policies, which state:
“Sexually explicit content like pornography is not allowed. Videos containing fetish content will be removed or age-restricted depending on the severity of the act in question. In most cases, violent, graphic or humiliating fetishes are not allowed to be shown on YouTube."
Last year, Hunter Walk, a product manager for YouTube said that it has become less of a big deal stating “There's some algorithmic detection but also rely upon community flagging and human review,” in a Quora Q&A.
While this might seem hilarious to some, YouTube has taken a strict stance on the content made available on its site, and is even taking measures to introduce a "child friendly" version of YouTube, said to launch "this year" according to a report from December.
