As the chip shortage cleared up by the end of 2023 and manufacturers had time to adjust the NAND supply, SSD prices, both external and internal, started to go back up. A recent report though suggests that these prices will finally lower again as Samsung and Hynix are apparently boosting their NAND production.
However that would probably take some time to materialize and if in case you are looking for some great deals now on external portable SSDs, Samsung has the T7 and T5 Evo selling at excellent prices that are worth considering.
As the name suggests the T7 is the faster drive out of the two models while the T5 Evo, though, slower, also means it can work on an older USB version too. In terms of features, these drives provide drop resistance up to a height of around two meters and the enclosure works well to conduct the heat away from the NAND flash and controller thanks to Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology. On Windows, they support exFAT and NTFS while on Mac, it supports HFS (Hierarchical File System) too.
