Apple's 2018 Macbook Pro with i9 chip slower than 2016 model with i7, reports YouTuber
sssplus and 5 others reacted to DevTech for a topic
Dude's been doing his job for nearly two decades tho, I find it hard to believe he could screw the pooch this hard outta nowhere. I'm curious as to what the actual issue is. Ive, the Knight of the Old Empire achieved fame for his "design" work in circles where "design" = appearance. The "design" of a cooling system for a modern CPU starts with basic thermal physics and then quickly transitions into Origami when applied to "lightweight" and "thin" in a field where heavy copper metal and big rotating fans offer the traditional first line of defense. Just to make things even harder, the ear piercing jet engine noise of tiny thin fans spinning super fast to move more air is no longer acceptable to consumers of laptops... Apple has a particularly suspect history of implying state of the art "CPU power" while violating basic physics which adds a "cultural" overhead to their design task. Easiest way to understand this particular shell game is by comparing laptop workstation 200 to 300 Watt power "bricks" to the small and light Apple ones. Without adequate power entering the laptop, real computing performance cannot be sustained but instead the trick is pulled off by using the battery for peak power demands and that actually hides the problem for most of Apple's target demographic. One you have sustained power flowing through the laptop, you then have to dump 50 Watts from the CPU plus xx Watts from the GPU (if the laptop has one) and then more Watts from the chipset, RAM, SSD, 4K LCD, power conversion efficiency etc. So the first thing to understand is that all of these "thin" "workstations" are failing miserably at dumping a 100+ Watt heat load and are throttling like crazy to meet the Marketing Fantasies of the entire market segment. The manufacturers have been trying a balancing act with a good chunk of Pure Fantasy being part of the equation along with very clever throttling software and the Origami of whatever advanced cooling they can come up with in a thin form factor. The clever fan design in the Surface Pro i7 boggles the mind when holding a tablet that contains a full i7 Windows Computer and could be a design inspiration for Apple, but Origami only gets you so far... Apple might be just the first manufacturer who gets the fantasy balloon pricked by real world physics, and might also be guilty of "original sin" by starting the "Thin and Light Is More Important Than Actually Computing With Your Computer" revolution, but the entire industry needs to get together and establish a "computability standard" so consumers, particularly professionals, can understand what they are losing in effective computing resources by saving a few meager pounds in their travel bag. Sir Ive probably has the wrong skill set for this problem, but the problem is larger than just Apple. There is a real physics limit to what can be stuffed into a small form factor no matter how much the cost of the device. Like all of us we hope Silicon Valley has some hidden magic and that Physics is Wrong and the new Apple will run at 4 ghz for 4 hours while calculating Protein Folding to Cure Cancer while also checking Facebook at your local Hipster Coffee Shop, but maybe next year...6 points -

If they're doubling down on the notch, I'm moving away from the iphone. It's clear that Apple doesn't give a flying crap about design anymore. It's just about being different for them now. And that's not the Apple I fell in love with. The curved edges design was also an idiotic decision that's not justified by anything.3 points -

Samsung might launch a $300 Bixby smart speaker alongside the Galaxy Note9
tsupersonic and 2 others reacted to astropheed for a topic
When I am roaming around house, I don't carry my phone. That is why I use Echo. You can have them carry out sequences like locking doors, shutting off lights, connect to FireTV and change channels, etc.. Also hands free in kitchen when cooking, I can still get info from Alexa. I actually like Google better, but girlfriend is all Amazon. Bixby for me was terrible on my S8 and gave up on it. May be better now, but better options if you really want a smart home. "What was it like Grandpa?" "It was bloody terrible, we turned off our own lights and locked our own doors."3 points -

Corning debuts Gorilla Glass 6, capable of withstanding up to 15 drops on hard surfaces
cleverclogs and 2 others reacted to x.iso for a topic
My old Samsung Omnia 7 took far more than 15 drops on hard surfaces, escalators, etc and never cracked. You know why? because if the impact was hard enough the battery door would pop out with the battery flying out and absorb/redirect the shock in the process. it's kinda sad they don't do that anymore. they could make the door sealed and waterproof, at least they could very well isolate the battery section from the rest of the body so that if it actually does pop out or leak in the water, you could just eject the battery and let it dry.3 points -

Windows 10 is still installed on under 700 million active devices

I certainly hope they announce it and retract immediately. They've constructed a travesty on a travesty. While it's not an ME kind of bad, it's its own form of bad. Most of its 'revolutionary' components are vastly underutilized, it doesn't meet a variety of consumer expectations and is updated rather slap-dashedly, hurried and carelessly. And while I'd never consider a Mac, iOS 12, as far as I've tested it, performs better in its beta than Windows 10 ever has in its 4 years of existence, from beta to today. I will always see Windows 10 as an OS designed for businesses and the IT industry, not for what they made it out to be as an OS running on everything Microsoft. And it's really a shame.2 points -

Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 will add support for leap seconds
Steven P. and one other reacted to TheGhostPhantom for a topic
Everyone important doesn't agree with Google. For example, NIST and USNO, believe leap smearing to be the incorrect solution. If Google wants to meet the government regulation, or specifically have any chance of being selected for Government contracts, they are likely to follow Microsoft approach eventually. You can do it all you want for private servers, but any public facing server should be handled the correct way. If you don't deal with UTC, then it might not matter to you, for those of us who do the accuracy of UTC time is important.2 points -

Microsoft updates OneNote for Windows 10 with many new features
DConnell and one other reacted to Ideas Man for a topic
I used to think that too but then I started to use it and have come to realise that it's hard to live without it. You can use it for a synchronised shopping list, recipe book, knowledge base, random note organiser or a very crude project organisational tool. I ended up using it for all of these things. It's far more efficient than having favourites littered in the browser and having random text files/Word documents scattered across your computer. With regards to the cloud comment, OneNote really works best when you have it synchronised across your devices. Things like having a shopping list synchronised with your tablet, computer and phone make it truly worthwhile. A recipe book that you can refer to at the supermarket on a whim is quite invaluable too. If you approach it with an open mind, the possibilities are there.2 points -

As is so common, the writer writes with so very little knowledge of what they write. Better in 2014? I feel that if you would have done a little more research you will find that all the things that are better then are still in Windows today and even enhanced. You can make the start menu full screen. As to touch, evidently you don't use it, but it is pretty awesome, most all of my devices have touch and I hate it when I to one that doesn't. The office apps have a specific touch mode that makes it even easier to use touch.2 points -

Microsoft is finally adding call recording to Skype
bluesman86 reacted to George P for a topic
I have to wonder, I could be wrong here, but the weakest part of Skype has always been it's backend server side bits. It sounds to me like killing off v7 and v8 being in such a long beta etc, is probably to do with some type of big shift in the backend service. I think Skype going forward, aside from being more integrated with Teams will probably share/use the same backend that they've built for Teams specifically. We could see a rapid update process for Skype going forward now that it's tied with Teams, and MS really wants Teams to succeed.1 point -
