Linux Mint working to bake Night Light directly into Cinnamon
eladbs and 4 others reacted to Nick H. for a topic
In other Mint news, an OEM called Framework is working with the Mint team so that its laptops have full compatibility with Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop. Apparently, these laptops also feature components and technologies the Mint team hasn't focused on supporting yet so it said this will "boost new areas of development for us." I would argue that this is bigger news than the implementation of a night light option. Although I have a Framework laptop so I'm biased.5 points -

Microsoft may be reviving the People app in Windows 11

Web apps are the death of PC at this rate, I blame Google mostly because they kicked off this fad and it's not looking like it's going away. I blame Microsoft for following it. Web apps have their place, sure, but not everything should be a web app.3 points -

Rare bee discovery thwarts Meta's nuclear-powered AI data center
hellowalkman and one other reacted to pickytech for a topic
The issue was not the nuclear power plant. The issue was that they wanted to build the data center and the fear was that _that_ would disrupt the bees. For those unaware, nuclear power is generated by literally boiling water with rods inside the pool of water. The byproduct is [non-radioactive] steam. The _risk_ is a fallout from a runaway nuclear reaction. For those also curious, the problem with Three Mile Island was not nuclear fallout (as widely exaggerated), but a lax environment that could have easily led to one. It's the lackadaisical enforcement of rules that is consistently the problem with the nuclear industry across the globe, to include Japan's most recent problems at Fukushima. Hopefully molten salt reactors can regain popularity, with some improvements to reduce operational problems (like https://news.byu.edu/byu-profs...to-produce-nuclear-energy), so we can generally avoid the human-driven downfall of nuclear power.2 points -

Download Paint 3D app now before it's gone from the Microsoft Store
Yonah and one other reacted to Malisk for a topic
I think this is a failure of user interface design to be honest. They should have been able to pull off supporting insertion of 3D objects in a 2D app and when 3D objects are selected, they can be manipulated. So, if you only wanted to work with a 3D object, you'd create a new white 2D surface and just plop it down there in the typical MS Paint interface. I think the main problem was that they made it look like a completely alien app to MS Paint users while at it. This made people go "wtf is this" and balk straight away. MS underrated the cultural significance of Paint in Windows after so many decades being part of it.2 points -

Microsoft may be reviving the People app in Windows 11

Have to give it to them though for attempting a 2nd/3rd time. Most cases they give up the 1st time especially when others they relied on changed their underlying APIs or policies. Some will like it, some will hate it, and some will just be neutral and not use it at all. My guess is that most people won't even know it's there.2 points -

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasuke There are several contradictory opinions that Yasuke was nothing but a slave. That Wikipedia article itself is trash. The article says that the Japanese warlord gave him name Yasuke and a sword. Does that mean he automatically becomes a samurai? Why was he given back to the jesuit from whom he was previously taken if he was a good Samurai? Does that mean Samurai were slaves and could be traded? The Wikipedia fantasy article doesn’t make any sense just like this game.2 points -

They can’t polish a Turd. Having a Black Samurai in medieval Japan is as blasphemous as being a straight male or a female in modern California. The Japanese gamers are up in arms and it has already become a political issue there with few politicians involved. Japanese are very protective of their culture. More you dig up details of Ubisoft justifying the questionable direction, more murkier it gets. I hope the game gets canned or they remove Yasuke and remain true to Japanese characters or just don’t call it Japan2 points -

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasuke Is the game about this character, Yasuke? If so, why focus on one anomaly in the whole history; to make a point? If not, then why a black samurai? Woke games don't sell. Look at recent releases that broke records. Don't listen to me though. I thought Star Wars Outlaws was quite good.1 point -

Phyrene reacted to qbrick for a topic
Watched a bit of a stream from a based Twitch streamer. And I have to acknowledge how EA seems to be more successful in infantilizing the players than other recent game projects that openly addressed modern audiences but by and large failed. Putting the player in the shoes of a primary school pupil by the design of the often condescending tone of the dialogues, the tamed down game mechanics, the whole edifying air of the game and by actively de-emphasizing the Rooks importance due to inter-npc cuddliness the player figure is barred from is probably very effective. Power to anyone fancying that.1 point -
