Invision Power Board 3.2.0 nears..

Tapatalk is an app (just looked for it) so no we won't be using it.

Good. It's insanely annoying to me to see a dialog pop on sites that use bugging me to use it everytime I navigate within the site's forums.

The mobile page displays ads. Tapatalk does not.

Just as an FYI, Tapatalk does have banner ad support, comes with it enabled by default for board owners who want to use it, and even warns users about disabling it because of the impact it has on board owners to monetize traffic.

Not to be confrontational, but the argument about ads is brought up quite a bit, and it strikes me as just a tad bit misinformation-ish. And the only reason I wonder about Tapatalk is because it's a monstrously popular app, despite being an app, and that apps really are a buttload more convenient, more responsive, and less of a burden on bandwidth for all involved than the mobile web experience.

Oh well. Frankly I hate using my mobile web, so I guess Neowin will only get my traffic when I'm in front of a computer.

I find it slightly ridiculous that people feel the need to use an app for a website, when the mobile site is optimised for that screen resolution. Still, each to their own.

This +1 We spent money and did a good job with mobile, and for the very few people who want an app, why!?

I rather mobile sites for most sites but service oriented sites i rather an app. Like say neowin.com or androidcentral.com or gizmodo.com - those i rather mobile sites. But for stuff like movies, weather (i know i can just look outside! :p) facebook and/or tweeting (if i did) and other such "service" then yeah I rather an app.

As for Neowin's new mobile page (IPB 3.2) well I guess we'll see if I like that better than what Timan cooked up! I love what he did, definitely don't need an app for Neowin.

Yes this is how I see it, for items such as Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox and a few sites too like Engadget and BBC where the app provides more features and a better UI than a mobile site.

Otherwise the browser suffices.

Because lazy people want the fastest way which is why they want an app version:

App: Grab a phone and tap on 'Neowin' app > Neowin! woo!

Mobile (Web): Grab a phone > Tap on browser > tap on bookmarks > Tap on Neowin > Neowin! Woo! (Or Grab a phone > Tap on browser > type an URL in > Tap on Go > Neowin! Woo!)

Get it now?

Some people do not think about add an icon onto their home screen instead of bookmarking.

I have an icon on home screen on my phone. It goes straight to Neowin site after tapping on icon on home screen.

But it is really up to you to create an app for the lazy people.. it doesn't matter to me. I can go either way.

Good luck with upgrade. Hopefully no huge downtime this time.

Yeah I have a Neowin icon on my home screen too, maybe we can make an app for a homescreen icon

Or have it on first visit (so cookie based) that it'll give a pop up telling you to add it to the homescreen. YouTube and a few other sites use this.

You don't have to. It already has Neowin icon on my homescreen. It automatically grabbed the icon from your site. I have an icon that match to your logo in your header above... even the same color as the default theme.

I'm really glad that an app such as Taptalk exist. Many forums don't do the extra effort of creating a mobile optimized website. You're right, for Neowin you don't need an application but for many others we just have no other option.

I guess that's true, but since I don't browse forums that don't have a mobile optimised site, either custom designed or the default IPB provided one, then it isn't an issue for me.

IPB has a default mobile variant? Cool. However, I tend to browse some vBulletin forum and trust me, either they don't have it or they don't want to implement it. That way I'm forced to use an app such as Tapatalk.

It does indeed. Here's the info about it. http://community.invisionpower.com/blog/1174/entry-6125-ipboard-32-update-mobile-skin/

How cool is that?!

Wish they'd hurry up and release a beta :D

I think he's talking about their own dev team.

They haven't released a downloadable beta yet.

Yes they have, it can be found in the Pre-Release Testing section of the Customer Lounge on the Community Forums, it's been there since the 9th June although I only noticed it yesterday.
