Now Rumors Are Swirling That Samsung Will Buy Nokia

Last week it was Microsoft. This week it's Samsung.

Market chatter says Samsung wants to buy Nokia, and Samsung isn't denying it, Arild Moen at Dow Jones reports. (Samsung says it doesn't comment on rumors as standard operating procedure.)

Moen doesn't say where the rumor of Samsung buying Nokia came from. It's just "speculation."

With Nokia's stock dropping, these sorts of rumors will start kicking up.

But, Nokia is so utterly screwed it's hard to figure out why anyone would want it. Is its strong distribution really worth the ~$20 billion+ it would cost to buy the company?

rather microsoft

how cool would it be to have MS branded phone with Windows phone *drool*

i am sure it is all for the IPs through

that's pretty much all Nokia has going for it of any real worth, it's IP portfolio

Samsung would never be allowed to buy Nokia by the regulators. and more importantly, I don't think MS would let this deal go through.

I suspect the rumor about MS buying them comes from MS setting up a similar deal with Nokia as they did with Nvidia, and if anyone tries to buy the Nokia phone division, MS will have a buyout clause to buy them first.

I can think of many words for that prospect, none of which include "cool".

That's probably true.

Personally, I think many companies are waiting for Nokia's stock to hit rock bottom, and then snap up its patents. The Microsoft-Nokia deal has certainly expedited that process though. I mean, who abandons an OS (Symbian) with a large chunk of the market, and another potential GNU/Linux hit (Meego) for an OS (WM7) with only 1% marketshare. The Nokia board is either insane or has the worst case of entryism (Elop) I've ever seen.

Learn to read, Symbian will live on for at least another 5 years. then go read the interview with Elop and the head developer of Meego of why Meego was dropped, like the fact that their developement had completely stagnated and was stuck on fixing bugs, and at best they would have had 3 devices out the door by 2014, as opposed to 12 WP7 phones in a year. MeeGo was a failure and a dead project.

and 1% marketshare, is A LOT more than 0%.

I'd rather Microsoft buy Nokia, than Samsung. I've nothing against Samsung, but I think it would be a better match up IMO.

MS is a software company, Samsung is a hardware company with tons of experiences and patents. How is that the MS deal would be better for all of us ? I would rather have Samsung buy Nokia...

But on the other hands, that would mean that more update fiasco, so I guess not
