UseLess
Probably not helpful, but just make sure that there is no physical write protection lock on the drive. Can you try deleting it using a different computer? If not, I would take everything you want to keep off the drive, and then try and format it. If you can't format it then...well that's probably not good. goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1010578-unable-to-delete-file-from-pendrive-any-guess-why-so/#findComment-594136658 Share on other sites

dancedar
Give the app Unlocker a go. Or try rebooting, *not* browsing to the file in Windows Explorer (as I've had similar problems, it's Windows trying to thumbnail the mkv) but open a cmd prompt and del ck1.mp4 That could work. Unless it's a drive error. Teebor
Failing drive? sounds suspiciously like a drive I had which started to go a bit wrong. You could write data and then it would dissapear, you couldn't remove data which was on it but you could sometimes read it. goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1010578-unable-to-delete-file-from-pendrive-any-guess-why-so/#findComment-594136680 Share on other sites

sc302 Veteran Posted July 7, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 7, 2011 To delete file: 1. take usb stick out of computer 2. lay usb stick on a flat surface 3. take a large blunt object and hit the usb stick hard with it 4. repeat step three until you see pieces of printed circuit board flying around, your file has been deleted 5. buy a new usb stick iKenndac, CPressland, Southern Patriot and 2 others 5 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1010578-unable-to-delete-file-from-pendrive-any-guess-why-so/#findComment-594136700 Share on other sites
Hum
I would buy a different brand drive, rather than HP. Maybe Sandisk. And in the future, be careful how you remove the drive from the computer. Either go thru the Eject process, or make very sure the drive is idle before removing. And of course, keep the USB plug covered, protected from static. Paul Ferson Veteran Posted July 7, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 7, 2011 ok .. i will buy new on . why happen so ? virus ?? Just general damage can cause it to happen, I think. If you remove it constantly without choosing to 'safely eject' the pen drive then it can happen over time. I think that's more likely to cause damage to FAT32 drives than NTFS drives, but don't quote me on that because I'm not absolutely certain. Perhaps someone else can confirm that? Crisp
Download the HP Disk Storage Tool and format it... http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/download.php?fh=9b8c87429c767b14abfb321d0152b482 This tool does wonders. If this fails then yes, I would have to say you have a USB stick on its way out. goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1010578-unable-to-delete-file-from-pendrive-any-guess-why-so/#findComment-594136786 Share on other sites
sc302 Veteran Posted July 7, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 7, 2011 I love these questions of why did it happen with no other information to help suggest why. Maybe because you were in the middle of an electromagnetic storm. Maybe you rubbed your feet too hard on the carpet. Maybe you got too close to the microwave. Maybe you carelessly placed it too close to a magnet. Maybe you put a torch to it. Maybe you ran it over with your car. Maybe it doesn't like you. Maybe you gave it a complex. Maybe it is incompatable with your computer. Maybe because the sun came up today it doesn't want to work. Maybe in this reality it doesn't work but when you go back to sleep it will. There are a ton of maybes as to why it happened, but without any information as to what happened prior it could be anything...and you may not know everything what happened between you using it and now. Highly unlikely a virus or malware would cause this, they like to spread, they like to steal information, they like your computer and files being on and intact. While there are some malicious software that likes to nuke your machine, those are the days of old...now it is more information theft they go after and the ability to spread themselves to other machines, which means they need to communicate on the network, which means your computer needs to be on for them to communicate. sc302 Veteran Posted July 7, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 7, 2011 ehhh ... freaking answer .. hheh . anyhow .. thanks ... because you wrote many words for me :p anytime that I can spread useless information that you probably already know. Just remember if you need help, when asking a question some sort of detail is need other than saying what it is doing and why did it happen. Many things in the world of computers isn't cut and dry and one path does not lead to the issue at hand, so the question of why can have many different thousands of answers but being that we know nothing of what happened between the time that it worked to now everything is speculation and guesses. The end conclusion of why is still the same, it doesn't function properly. What you don't know and will never be able to answer is how to prevent it from happening again because you can't tell us what happened to cause it and we can tell you what happened to cause it because there are too many variables that could cause this end result...it could even be an internal hardware malfunction where you have no control of prevention. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64963-order,4/description.html there are quite a few links listed here: http://www.google.com/search?q=hp+flash+drive+format&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe= Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1010578-unable-to-delete-file-from-pendrive-any-guess-why-so/#findComment-594136864 Share on other sites
Seizure1990
Removing a drive without doing it "safely" doesn't cause permanent damage. It just damages the file system. I'm curious to see what will happen when OP tries to run that HP reformatting tool.
