I don't know where you got that information from, but it still uses windows just like every version has. There's a new UI for tablets and smart phones but it has nothing to do with desktop computers, and programs will still run in normal windows. In any case they would never change the name Windows no matter what happened.

No. The new immersive user interface is for desktops, laptops, and tablets; it isn't just for tablets and smartphones.

Well, he was referred to real world windows, which don't overlap, or extend past physical boundaries. :)

Yeah but real world windows can't help me to interact with Windows^^

Also, wow, you two have similar names. FMH, MFH.

I know - he ripped me off. But I rarely agree with him^^

microsft is releasing the last three versions of windows according to their secret migration plan (more details via email): they intend to create a migration path from legacy windows compatible applications to their new operating system.

path is as follows:

windows 7 - virtualization of userspace

windows 8 - virtualization of applications

windows 9 - virtualization of Operating system kernel

Helios/Barrelfish/Midori/Singularity

this will allow developers(and microsoft) to gracefully move their applications into a new "shell" so to speak... the new microsoft operating system willl run applications in containers which behave as multiple virtual operating systems or to all familiar with *nix a jail, but will allow applications to access kernel level via that container alone. this will keep old applications believing they are running in legacy windows operating system while still providing option to interface with new "host kernel" or "Satellite kernel".

"Satellite kernels" will lead to "streamed calls" or to put in in 2011 lingo ... OsaaS or (Operating system as a service) ... but yet again (more details via email) sry... all I can give you/public for now :-)

With the HUGE success of Windows 7, from a marketing standpoint Windows 8 is the perfect name.

Both Windows 3 and 7 were big successes, whereas 1.01 and 2.x were not. Maybe Microsoft has good luck when they call their versions "Windows [single number]?"

Could it be "Windows.Next"?

I hope not. Because eventually, it will be replaced by Windows 9 and not be the "next" OS release.

Frankly, having "cute" names is stupid. They have a good thing going with Windows 7, thus they should just keep it going with Windows 8. Sometimes the simplest product names are the best ones.

Let's hope not. Having HTML5 'widgets' act as programs and having only two open at a time on screen max is the most horrible thing they can do to themselves. Goddamn tablets.

They may implement a way for us to have more than two immersive apps on the screen at the same time. We've actually seen very little about Windows 8 so far. They aren't HTML5 widgets either; they're apps and it's very likely developers will be able to do an awful lot with the new development platform. I'm hoping that within a few years, developers will be able to create all of their programs using this new development platform (Photoshop, Visual Studio etc) while maintaining usability. We don't know what is planned yet, what they're going to release with Windows 8, and add to future versions.

Why not 'Windows Infinite'? It would be a reference to the number eight due to the fact it's can be flipped on its side to become the symbol of infinity. Plus, there'll be an infinite number of devices it'll run on.... or something? I can't think of any other real reason. :p

Infinity? So does that mean my Windows 8 system is never obsolete? ;)

My guess is the new name is a 9-letter word, and if the light-colored squares in the wallpaper puzzle represents the new name, then the name is : ? S ? ? ? ? ? T ?

The only word I could think up atm is A S S O C I A T E ...... lol, "Windows Associate" dosen't sound a good name to me.
