OptiPlex
IF ASTEROID DOESN'T GET US, THE VOLCANO WILL... 11:00 - 11 September 2003 The biggest threat to mankind was revealed yesterday to be a deadly supervolcano bubbling away under one of the world's most famous national parks. Vulcanologists say the seismic hotspot is ready to blow and will spell Armageddon for our planet. The doomsday warning comes only a week after astronomers claimed an asteroid was on a lethal collision course with Earth and is expected to hit on March 21, 2004. The impact and aftershock was said to be enough to wipe out the entire human race. But now it seems we could be facing a more imminent threat and one much closer to home. The gigantic volcano has a crater bowl 53 miles long and 30 miles wide and lies below Yellowstone Park, in Wyoming in the United States. If it erupts, it will be the loudest noise heard on Earth since 73,000BC. The monster explosion would send fireball lava rocks shooting miles up into the atmosphere. The ground would be swamped by a red hot liquid sea while above, huge dust clouds would block out sunlight, sending global temperatures tumbling. Vulcanologists have long known about the potential and explosive danger of the sleeping beast. The aftermath of an eruption would plunge the planet into a devastating nuclear-style winter. And all life would face an impossible struggle to survive as acid rain deluged the planet. The latest warning about a future eruption came from Professor Bill McGuire, of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at University College, London. He said: "The Yellowstone super-volcano has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago, so the next is long overdue. "The impact of a Yellowstone eruption is terrifying to comprehend. Molten rock would be flung 30 miles into the atmosphere. "One thousand cubic kilometres of lava would pour out of the volcano, enough to coat the whole of the USA with a layer five inches thick." It is hard to believe the inspiration for cartoon bear Yogi's Jellystone home could vent such devastation. The Yellowstone super-volcano was only identified 35 years ago when it was picked out by satellite photography. This summer, seismologists picked up strong underground movements at the park and a mild earthquake rumbled just nine miles south of Yellowstone. In July, a section of the park was closed after increased activity at the thermal springs. The last time a super-volcano blew was in Sumatra 75,000 years ago. Experts said the impact almost destroyed mankind and the population of Europe dropped to just a few thousand people. The latest shocking discovery comes after experts revealed earlier this year that some volcanoes previously considered dormant were still active. Researchers were alarmed to discover that the ground was still "moving" beneath four supposedly dormant volcanoes in South America. http://www.thisisbristol.com/displayNode.j...ntentPK=7002734 OH NO WE COULD DIE SOON!  :ninja:

RaQ
you ****ing joking right? the yellowstone magma chamber is not going to blow and they can NOT predict an exact date and what will happen. blame it on the USA. god dammit..

seethru
I have a really hard time believing this lol, they JUST told us of this supposed threat less than a year away? PFFT.
KC
I live like a hour and a half away from Yellowstone. the "minor" earth quakes that happen in our area have been increasing both in streangth and frequency  dunno whether to believe this or not.. Its true.you ****ing joking right?the yellowstone magma chamber is not going to blow and they can NOT predict an exact date and what will happen. Your correct they can not predict the exact date or if it will happen. All they know is about ever 600,000 years it has happend in the past. So what they are saying is it "could" happen. this is old news people have knowen about this for a long time.
zhangm Supervisor Posted September 16, 2003 Supervisor Share Posted September 16, 2003 That is pure, unadulterated bull****. If the volcano was on an eruption cycle of 600,000 years, why haven't regular mass extinctions occured at that regular interval throughout history? Yeah that part my Science teacher told us about that last year, but it will miss the Earth by at least anywhere from 800-1100n/miles
kryptonik
How come all of a sudden they are predicted that we will all die soon. First the comet, now the volcano. ;)
.Kompressor
that's not the ONLY Super volcano around.... There's one even bigger under the ocean...bubbling away as we speak. Saw this on the Learning Channel. :) if that blew Tidal Waves will flatten along with boulders flying out...LOL
idkfa
who cares if it happens or not, its not like we have much say in it
MikeN
Here's a link to the BBC Horizon programme entitled Supervolcanoes on this very subject... Very interesting and thought provoking it was too... And if the asteriods or supervolcanos don't get you, then the mega-tsunami will!?!
.Atlantis
I really don't think we could do anything to stop it. Our earth is always prone to disaster. And most life-threatening things out there are found out by Astronomers and it never get's told to the public. No way. World worry. --Grant

RaQ
Okay well with all being said, I'll outrun all on my -future- crotch-rocket.. rummmmmm rummmm... lol. If it happesn it does, What if we go into the coean? and far enough out down the marina trench or whatever. is the volcano going to come that far and heat it up that much to which a submersiable couldn't stand. Pzaga
If it's time to die, you will die. Hoping is just a lie to yourself that it might not happen. :) Hoping is wishing that the very, very, very small chance of one not dying will happen to them. :p For example... the volcano blows... the chance of extraterrestrials saving just you at the right time is incredibly small... but it's there. :p But yeah, you die when you die. No use worrying.
TranceSphere
What if we go into the coean? and far enough out down the marina trench or whatever Cos we aint got the tech to go down that deep, you would be crushed to death. And no sub can go down that deep. And even if you did you would have to build a massive city with farms etc..... I dont think so :p And it wont heat up the earth, it would block the sun light (Nuclear Winter). You could do what they did in the matrix, go underground where it is still warm cos they blocked out the sunlight.
