BBC and Sky awarded rights in new Formula 1 deal

The worst thing is the BBC taking half of the coverage because they still want the revenue from that. If they'd said to Bernie "We want all or nothing", he'd be totally shafted with the Concorde agreement, but neither BBC, Sky nor FOM give a toss about the fans. Pathetic.

I love F1, but I flat out refuse to line the pockets of Sky to the tune of ?40 a month when all I want to see is some SPORT. If they even sold the damn sports pack separately, I'd consider it, but it's a total joke.

The more I think about this, the more I think the BBC shoulders the blame here. We pay a hefty licence fee and what do we really get in return? The BBC has decided to cut costs to save its other investments in BBC 3 etc.

Well said. This clip from Newsnight instantly springs to mind about BBC 3...

Back on-topic, our house thankfully still has Sky Sports at the moment (but that might not last with the way money is in our family at the moment), but I'm still extremely p'ed off at this. BBC have effectively given up one of their crown jewels. F1 in recent years has pulled in millions of viewers each race; this season, some races have had over 5 million viewers. And here's an interesting stat courtesy of Sniff Petrol: The peak BBC audience share for the last F1 race was 47.9%. Almost HALF of all people watching TV were watching F1.

WTF1 have the right idea to combat Sky taking over F1...

Tip. Watch half the F1 on BBC and the other half streaming online. The ?600 not spent on Sky will buy you a ticket to a Grand Prix.

But hopefully the deal won't go through. FOTA have said that it's in the teams' contracts that all F1 races are free-to-air, and this is a direct violation of their contracts, so either Bernie backs out on the Sky deal, or teams will start leaving the sport. Hopefully, they'll all be united against this deal. And I'm guessing Avaaz will start a campaign soon to stop the deal going through. They've been successful so far with having the Bahrain GP removed, and stopping Rupert Murdoch from buying BSkyB, so it'd be good to see them pick this one up.

Feck the government, BBC and F1.

Government for in effect cut the BBC budget and making them move to Manchester(Yes government idea!)

Feck the BBC for not seeing the contract through and rejigging things, then again management at the BBC isn't the greatest, Dr Who production has been a complete joke.

And screw F1 for accepting the change.

It will sure be interesting on the sponsorship side, because it will affect teams like Williams, even more so for new teams.

Sky has played a big part in the problem of football (which I'm very disillusioned with) I hope for the sake of F1 it doesn't get even more silly then it already is.

One more for the "Feck the government" pile: Feck the government for not making F1 a protected sport. They made The Ashes a protected sport, but not F1.

The Ashes always involves England in very contested matches that have been going for longer than F1. So no comparison, the sport has more heritage. F1 seems to be taking a turn for "the German driver everyone else is chasing and will do for the foreseeable future is called <insert name here>".

bernie said in a guardian interview that the contract starts just after the concorde agreement ends so he won't be breaking the agreement. he said there probably won't need another agreement.

I suspect that this deal will go through. lets just hope that the races air in full but a few hours delayed, i'd be happy with that, i wanna watch them on bbc1hd :)
