KeR
I design sites for a living, and I like this one. Some minor alternations that I would make: -Center top AD. -Make logo menu item and move into main navigation. -Rounded corners for main menu. -Contrast comment bubbles, and top/right align with article. -More spacing between articles and the <hr> break line. -Get ride of the rollovers for the sub menu, there is no need to have them. Gaffney
I like the new layout. When I first seen it I didn't really like it but after using it for a bit it feels smooth, fresh and new. It feels web 3.0 or 2.5 as websites start to ditch the glossy and go for more cleaner, sharper matte designs. One fault I can see though is the forum posts etc in the sidebar, the link text is very blurry. nekkidtruth
I'd definitely like to agree with the suggestions to use a percentage rather than set size. It is really silly looking on a wide screen. There's literally 50% of the page completely empty/blank. Scorpus Veteran Posted July 30, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 30, 2011 Page width complaints are kinda strange considering the new layout uses exactly the same width as pretty much all other major tech news websites, give or take maybe 10-20px. .Markus
Nice improvement, makes the site look a touch more professional and gives of a fresh feel to it! (Y) I do find it slightly squeezed together though on a higher resolution monitor, with 50% of the webpage being blank on a 1920x1080 resolution. This is a common trend with modern looking sites, and surprises me as consumers are more and more into HD monitors and PC to TV streaming Also find the headlines to be slightly clashing with their chosen colour and boldness. A slightly darker colour like the classic Neowin one would make the headlines easier on the eye to read and also fit with the rest of the website colours. Final thing is my biggest pet peeve, as there seems to be no anti aliasing on text while using Google Chrome (dev. build 14), however seems to be looking perfect using IE9. Except those minor annoyances, a welcomed update to Neowin! Well done guys! MS Bob 11
Looks good. Best thing is the font is so easily configurable. The only thing that I crave forever is a fully wide layout like there was 2 iterations of Neowin before. Give us that always and I will not be disappointed. And the settings don't work (yet) with InPrivate Filtering/Tracking Protection ON in IE. I think part of the problem is, a lot of us "geeks' use resolutions such as 1920x1080. The result is a very cramped look with a lot of wasted space. That's why it's better use a percentage rather than a fixed width. However, if you stretch it out too much, paragraphs of news quickly become very difficult to read across a huge pixel width. This is why a lot sites, including Neowin, still use ~600px as their content width Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1015830-its-here/page/7/#findComment-594202646 Share on other sites
Twiddle
I dislike it. Everything just feels very, don't know how to put it...The news doesn't jump out at me anymore, everything feels smaller, the pictures next to articles make me feel like they are ads rather than pictures about the article for some reason. Everything looks crammed together, and unspaced. Wish there was an option to keep the old look :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1015830-its-here/page/7/#findComment-594202648 Share on other sites
Vice
The new design (N) it just looks poorer compared to the old one. Not to mention most of the time that I load the front page it doesn't work. I just get a white page with links without the site style. I refreshed 10 times and only once did I get it to load properly. Go back to the old design it looked much better. Demon-Knight
Site looks OK, just need to be wider as it looks too narrow. Yorak
Wow some of you guys take this redesign way too seriously. Relax. No need to be so rude to the devs, lol. ambiance
The new default skin is great, but I can't stand the colours on the dark. I think the icons on the articles need some consistency. The icon of the couple on the couch needs to be removed and the photographer shot. Twice. Gladiatorus
I just don't know, I may get used to it but as of right now, I really like the old version so much more. One thing I find very wrong in the new design is that the space between posts is very small, it all looks too squized out. Spacing is vital in this kind of designs, it makes them look much more editorial and clean. dknm
Could you look into adding a wide layout option in the future? Currently, it looks quite good .That border around pictures though, is a horrible reminiscence of how I would structure a CV in word . Be more generous with spacing (couple pixels under h2's and some before and after the news block),everything looks compressed if you will. It grows on me. Pow
I just preferred the previous design because it was easier to read the front page. This new re-design I'm finding it difficult to actually read the content. :/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1015830-its-here/page/7/#findComment-594202738 Share on other sites
Ryoken
I have to vote against making the width of the content full the screen, or at least if you must, make it a choice.. If it filled my screen it would be an image, followed by a line of text.. It would look horrible, and make it much harder to read. I donno about anyone else, but when reading large amounts of text I don't want it to fill my whole wide-screen, it's just too much. If I need too I'll pivot my screen 90degrees and read it in portrait mode, but if not then I resize the window ( or in most cases, do nothing, as most programs, and websites don't default to fill the whole screen either.. they use a "Page" based design that uses a fixed width, like here ).. Jan Veteran Posted July 30, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 30, 2011 I think it looks OK, it's quite a change, although it feels very, very cramped. A few suggestions: 1. For IE9 users who have pinned Neowin.net, can you make the logo have a white circle behind it? Like ollllddd versions of Neowin used to have? 2. Remove the Get Involved picture, really un-necessary. 3. Make the logo non-capitals, something about the capital N annoys me :D 4. Add the colour black 5. Allow us to remove the Keep up to date panel, the Most Popular tags panel and the Latest in software/gaming panel. 6. The backgrounds aren't transparent enough, they're distracting. Those are a few things for now :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1015830-its-here/page/7/#findComment-594202746 Share on other sites
Denis W. Veteran Posted July 30, 2011 Veteran Share Posted July 30, 2011 Meant to post this an hour ago but the site was acting up. Page width complaints are kinda strange considering the new layout uses exactly the same width as pretty much all other major tech news websites, give or take maybe 10-20px. Also, both iterations of Atlas used fixed widths if I recall correctly. Given we've had this fixed width setup for a year and a half, with all recent news content written with those dimensions in mind, why would it change now? About fluid widths: 1) Promo images are a fixed size, and to compensate there would have to be increased whitespace around the images, or to one side. 2) The news summaries (new to Pegasus) are limited to 200 words. A larger width will result in a lot of whitespace under a long (run-on) sentence for each article. 3) Articles are 640 pixels wide. Images/videos in articles can go up to that width, and IMO it looks nicer when the content is immediately flanked by borders on both sides. In comparison to the old Finity/Shift designs, a shorter width looks more professional and visually pleasing.
