Loving the new refresh (though I've chosen wide Legacy as it's not as 'boxy'), but is there a way to hide or minimize the "About the Author" box under the news article/tags? It's rather...redundant after a few times and is now only taking up space. Couldn't find anything when searching.

Edit: Just noticed this about the Google +1 button, don't know if it's only me or not. FF5 stable. Sorry if it's the wrong topic.

Yeah I've noticed this sometimes as well, it'll load fine occasionally then will load like this other times.

It's not that I don't like it, I find it quite useful and I think it's great for new or less-frequent readers to get to know who's posting what (especially editorials). But I predict that after seeing the same authors' information 10/50/100 times it may get a bit repetitive and a 'waste of space', hence why I suggested an option to hide or minimize it for users who already know the author by name (or for those who just don't care). Maybe I'm just thinking too far ahead already... :)

Give "Headline View" a shot.

See, that makes it worse!

I liked how beefy each news item was, a lot of information just from reading the front page: https://www.neowin.net/forum/uploads/post-2-1253440302.png (caution, big image)

Look at how much content each news item had, just on the front page! If interested, I'd click "read more." It felt very much like reading a newspaper.

I'd like an option to have much more of the article displayed on the front page. I don't know if this is asking too much, but if it is, just tell me.

PS:

To clarify, this is what I mean in the new layout:

[HEADLINE]

[TAG] By [WHO], [WHEN]

[sUMMARY] <- This part right here is now too short

The comments are still way inferior to what they were before, I can already see people use it less and less.

Problem is, there?s too much space, too much padding, too much white. It?s also a little harder to know who replied to a comment and who posted a new one completely. Since the new legacy theme is there, I have it running all the time, and the comments are the only huge issue remaining about the new interface.

Why Neowin is still supporting IE6?

<!--[if IE 6]>

:x

Cause sadly people still use it, and it wasn't that hard to do. Its also not so much as support, but makes the site usable.

The old summaries were longer because they used the first paragraph, which was also cut off and not always clear. We changed that to "Excerpts" which allows news staff to summarize, without any cut-off up to 225 characters their story, some are shorter than others but they now all make sense and in most cases are more helpful than just a part of the first paragraph.

I prefer them this way personally, just sucks for the people that use the expanded width view. Then again, that's just a convenience that they were lucky to get in the first place.

Tiles no longer scroll, are now fixed (cooler effect :p)

What are these tiles spoken of here? I've probably seen them and just don't know that this is what you're referring to them as...

They are the custom backgrounds you can choose from in the Settings menu.

Yeah, I mean, while Excerpts makes the front page look better for devices, it would've still been nice to be given the option of the other way, which is, as you say, first paragraph, cutoff after 200 or 225 characters.

Which is, to me, the thing that has always made Neowin so appealing to read through.

Since the change, the front page, to me, has become more of a chore than anything else, but that's just me.

PS: I can't form a real opinion on expanded view right now, because it doesn't make the front page better either way.
