Wii U in 'development hell', claims tipster

Recommended Posts

Nintendo is facing "development hell" with the Wii U, according to an alleged insider, and Wii U controllers supplied to developers "still don't work properly."

The tipster - talking to previously reliable Nintendo leak site 01.net - has listed a number of hiccups and hurdles supposedly causing problems for Nintendo's on-going development of Wii U, including claims the final hardware has been "rushed through the door".

"According to our source, it seems that the final architecture has been rushed through the door, with undesirable consequences," the 01 report reads.

Those consequences allegedly include "inadequate" streaming and wireless functionality integral to the Wii U's innovative design, the source continues, and speculation that the console's main chip set "may be a tad too cheap."

"So far, the wireless functions simply do not work at all," it continues, claiming that as a result, developers are working with a tethered controller which apparently "still does not work properly".

"Many developers are feeling lost, their progress impeded by a distinct lack of visibility, their working hours by the quasi-paced daily software updates," it's said.

01.net concludes that developers are quietly expecting a June 2012 release but that Nintendo engineers are struggling to make the architecture work in time.

Of course, this is all just rumour for now but it comes from the same source that for one tipped a second 3DS circle pad, something that has since been confirmed.

Should we be worried, readers?

yeaahhh since nintendo bascially became a whitewashed iclone company.....

seriously thier site doesn't even look like a game company's site. no edge or personality.

they've became just another whitebox inc.

What's this? They haven't finished working on something that isn't out until June 2012? ohmy.gif

Though I also seem to distinctly remember all those tethered controllers also working perfectly fine at every single E3 demonstration as well.

it's not like Nintendo finishes a console a week before the release. the hardware should be 100% finished by now so that devs can make proper games. Nintendo needs to finalize the design to be able to send the specs to manufs to produce them en masse. all the logistics of shipping a brand new console takes a very long time.

i just dont buy this story at all and here is why.

1. they that is Nintendo is using a current generation IBM chipset Power 7 chip based Multi-threaded cores based on some reports @ E3 and it is most reasonable to say that as it is IBMs latest architecture.

2. Those chips are not Cheap parts that is not to say Nintendo dont get a Bulk Deal but to claim they may be using cheap Parts is just shotty and goes to show the Developer that could be saying all this junk has no clue what it is running and possible assumes it is running some Off the black market copy Cat like chip made in a dirty Factory with low quality standards and stuff

3. also if this is true all of it it also could mean it was all taken out of context of what the Developer could i say Could have been talking about to witch may been referring to older Development Prototype kits that had these issues.

4. i dont think Developers have finalized hardware just yet i would imagine that they wont get those till Late October to early December so that they have 5+ month or more assuming the launch of the Wii is in june then to finish up there game on finale hardware . if i remember right sony did not have finalized hardware till about around just before E3 of 2006 just 5 months before launch

Take it with a massive grain of salt, but I wouldn't be surprised. You can't rest on your laurels in this industry, and I think Nintendo did to an extent, just like it did after the Super Nintendo. They hit it big with the Wii which was very innovative, then figured innovation was what would set them apart from everyone else. While I agree that it does (Nintendo's always been innovative), you can't just half-ass the components of your console and handheld just to make hand-over-fist money.

Nintendo's largely not aware of what developers and consumers want (see: this whole 3DS joystick debacle), it just gives them things it tells them will be the next big thing. And the concept behind the Wii U is somewhat unique, but it's not going to set them apart enough.

I could have sworn the title said "claims hipster"

on topic: Their products have lost that flair that used to attract me to them so much, didn't think this console would amount to much. I really hope they prove me (and most others) wrong but I really don't see it :(

Edge or personality? It looks nice and xbox.com isn't that much different.

you know what would set nintendo apart????

having some actual decent games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, they seem to be spending so much effort on new fangled (some would say gimmicky) controllers, the console's design and silly names when it is the games and only the games that people really care about. If they keep this up they're going to suffer the same fate as Sega.

Nintendo does has a huge history of failed products...

Nintendo 3DS (questionable right now...)

A lot of the peripherals generally had about 5 or less games outside of Japan that used them.
