AM3 CPU on an AM2 (+?) Mobo

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it's possible to put an AM3 CPU (Like AMD 1055T) on an AM2 (not sure if its an AM2+ or not) Mobo and would it work correctly?

The mobo itself is : Acer RS780HVF (Well sounds more like an AMD board but not sure)

Please do not suggest me to buy a new mobo, I'm just asking :)

Nope unfortunately.

Socket AM3 breaks compatibility with AM2/AM2+ processors due to a subtle change in key placement. The AM3 socket has 941 pin contacts while AM2+ processors have only 938 pins.

I believe AM2+ processors can go in some early AM3 mobo's but not the other way round.

Other way round.

AM3 CPU can work in some AM2+ (not all) mobo with a BIOS update because AM3 CPU supports both DDR3 and DDR2 RAM all AM3 mobo that support DDR3 RAM can not work with AM2+ CPU.

You'd have to look through the BIOS updates for your board to check for compatibility with a certain CPU. But as far as the general AM3 in an AM2 board question, I can say with absolute certainty that it works (assuming the BIOS supports it). I'm currently running an AM3 processor in my old AM2/AM2+ board with no problems.

Well the problem is, the mobo I'm currently on atm is an modified AMD mobo for Acer and not sure where to look updates for it as Acer website doesn't have it and doubt it ever will because they simply don't answer my emails- well nothing suprising here, who would answer a customer from Estonia right?

That's lame they don't answer, I would try to find a phone number. If you can't get any BIOS updates or documentation your only option is to just try the new CPU (or find someone else that already has). It'll physically fit and could work to a certain extent, but if the BIOS doesn't have support it could get labeled as "unknown cpu" and possibly have the core count or clock speed dropped down. If the board was made around the same time or after the CPU was released, it's entirely possible that it'll work just fine, but you would definitely be taking a chance.

Like You said before then You did put an AM3 CPU on an AM2 (+) mobo right? Is this the one : AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition ? Actually that would do fine for me if I could get it to work. You know getting support for Estonia is actually the "Mission Impossible" , no one couldn't care less about a country with 1.1mil people in it, sad it is tho.

EDIT: I'm currently on AMD Phenom 9650 Quad 2.3 - well lets be honest that aint too bad right? Well it is as the L2 cache is just 2mb, well that just doesn't cut it anymore.

I don't know why didn't I think of CPUZ earlier. Seems Acer has just done some renaming on mobo and it's an AM2+ socket if I can understand the first picture correctly, so by all means it wouldn't have any problems running a 1055T?

EDIT: Im not going to make a new topic about it but also wanted to ask, finally found a tech sheet for the PC and it says Up to 8 GB DDR2 667/800 MHz but when ever I open Speccy it says my 5GB-s run on 333MHz, why would that happen?

EDIT 2: Well also found a page with BIOS updates but there are 3 of them and as I've never done anything with BIOS I'll list them and maybe someone can tell me which one I should choose and what should I do/know about it before starting:

R01.C0

R01.C0L

R01.B4

Guessing its the B4 but just wanted to be sure.
