Ambroos
It's still quite slow for me, not at the level of the last version... I don't know if it's a problem with IPB in general, but compared to other big sites (like Tweakers.net) Neowin has always been really really slow for me... 4-5 second page load times are simply too much! (edit: posting this just took 15 seconds!) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1028052-upgrade-day/page/5/#findComment-594337654 Share on other sites

Steven P. Administrators Posted September 26, 2011 Author Administrators Share Posted September 26, 2011 Bear with us as we fix some issues (like ads appearing for tier 2 subscribers). Unfortunately there wasn't a lot we could say as the upgrade took much longer than expected due mainly to SQL db conversions. As you can imagine we don't actually have a duplicate test site to test our (live) db as it'd pretty huge already. Southern Patriot
Glad to see you guys are getting the speed issues sorted out. I would think that you guys would learn from your past mistakes, but obviously not. Southern Patriot
Unfortunately there wasn't a lot we could say as the upgrade took much longer than expected Yeah, but it ALWAYS takes much longer than you guys anticipate. Common sense would tell you that since you have had these types of problems EVERY ****ING TIME you make a change like this that you should simply shut the forums down until the upgrade is finished, and then TEST THEM FIRST before bringing them back online for everyone to use. They work fine with a single user viewing (trust me, I was having a load of fun on them last night while you guys were all seeing the 403 forbidden message), It's a totally different story though once 1000's of users start visiting. Lexcyn
Love the sense of entitlement people have. These forums are FREE to use and participate in, and because you cannot use them for a couple of days you freak out? Seriously, there are way more serious issues in this world to be focusing your energy towards. ;) Keep up the good work guys, I do like the new forum look. Even the new rich text editor is awesome. ckempo 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1028052-upgrade-day/page/5/#findComment-594337730 Share on other sites

Because Apache fails at this, honestly look at setting up http://nginx.net/, you can use it to serve just like images and static content like that, then use Apache to serve PHP pages, it will make a huge difference :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1028052-upgrade-day/page/5/#findComment-594337736 Share on other sites

Apache is totally capable of handling the load Neowin experiences, even when we have breaking news stories that attract thousands of hits. This is simply proved by the fact that the speed was fine before the upgrade, and all the was changed was the IPB software. Phouchg
Congrats on the update. I likey! A few minor gripes, of course - big fonts, much wasted space. But finally unified design for the forum and the news page. Did I say anything about a single user testing? No, I didn't. But you don't simply go from no one using it to everyone using it. You allow a limited number of people to beta test it, and slowly bring in more and more people. And even a single person testing it should have noticed that things were missing, like the editor! Roger H. Veteran Posted September 26, 2011 Veteran Share Posted September 26, 2011 C'mon, you know you can't test every situation in a test lab. What editor isn't working also? I have no issues here but maybe that's cuz of my status as well? I tested on the test forums as a mod so maybe I didn't see those issues you guys are mentioning now. Speed definitely improved! And even a single person testing it should have noticed that things were missing, like the editor! You didn't, but it's still relevant because it shows that problems can arise from something as simple as having thousands of users online (vs. one or a couple). As for testing it, the new skin was extensively tested by staff and subscribers (and later, members). As with almost everything, you can't account for every possible scenario. Some users may be running a specific browser configuration that doesn't work well with certain things. Other users may have forgotten to clear their cache.
