Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of All Time

Recommended Posts

Netflix recently published a list of the ten most rented movies of all time. This got us thinking; what are the most downloaded movies on BitTorrent? Today we present the full chart of the top ten most pirated movies transferred via the now ubiquitous protocol, a list headed by Avatar.

Every day millions of people use BitTorrent to download and share movies. But what are all these people downloading?

For nearly half a decade we have compiled weekly and yearly lists of the most popular downloads, and following on from Netflix’s publication of themost rented movies of all time, we today present the equivalent for BitTorrent downloads.

With an estimated 21 million downloads, Avatar is the most pirated movie of all time, followed by The Dark Knight and Transformers with about 19 million downloads each. Interestingly enough, none of the above films were present in Netflix’s list.

The BitTorrent and Netflix lists do show some overlap, as Inception and The Departed make an appearance in both.

Despite the massive piracy, the films below have not done too shabbily at the box-office. Avatar is the best grossing movie of all time and The Dark Knight is third, right before Star Trek.

The list below is based on statistics is gathered from public BitTorrent trackers, dating back to early 2006. As BitTorrent’s usage was only a fraction of what it is today in the years before, we expect the list below to cover all the most downloaded movies on BitTorrent.

  1. Avatar (2009)
  2. The Dark Knight (2008)
  3. Transformers (2007
  4. Inception (2010)
  5. The Hangover (2009)
  6. Star Trek (2008)
  7. Kick-Ass (2010)
  8. The Departed (2006)
  9. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  10. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

Only didn't see kick ass and the first hangover. I have the Blu-Ray now after my friend begged me to go see the 2nd one with her :D Laughed so hard I had to get the first one!

Every other movie on that list though I already own! Good stuff

Now the question is, how many of those are on that list because people wanted to watch them, and how many are on the list because people didnt want to pay to watch them.

Probably all of them. :)

I find it kinda amusing that PoTC3 ended up on there. I'm assuming people paid to watch the other two, and just thought 'not a chance' on that one.

I've seen all of those. I'm surprised classic movies like Shawshank Redemption or Godfather aren't on that. Also, I expected Matrix, LOTR, Titanic (I know blech - but it was really popular amongst people)

Thought the talk of anything "illegal" on here was forbidden.

No, piracy is popular so it's fine to discuss it /s

Also looking at all of these movies, I can see they were all garbage, that's why people pirated them. After all, people only pirate bad movies, right? Good movies never get pirated...

So we can have the news but hush about it?

Great idea.

I bet the forum rules are less strict on this than you think.

It's generally to prevent aiding in piracy and all that jazz, this is just talking about statistics. :)

The Incredible Hulk and Avatar? That is... surprising.

I agree with the Hulk but Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time. That makes sense its one of the most pirated.

another surprise is no "Harry Potter movies."

I don't think your average pirate is a Harry Potter fan.

Movies are most in demand when they are first released (obviously). Hence why everyone on the list is fairly new. Most people aren't going to download a movie from 1994 because they probably already have it on DVD, or even if they don't, the downloads of that movie aren't going to be nearly as high as a movie just released.
