Here is a video of Siri and TellMe in use side-by-side

It's not Australian but this one's a little closer to home for us and it shows off search and dictation in action:

Better but did you notice how the guy spoke like a robot? "Coffee..in..hertford" I have to do the same with my sgs2, but you can talk fluently to siri.

I can't find a dictation video but this shows the conversation features...very accurate :p

Siri is accurate (it does afterall use Nuance for it's speech recognition, and they've been perfecting this stuff for many years), but so is TellMe. (Which actually used to be based partially on Nuance before it advanced) :3.

He didn't have to say it that way, that is just the power of Siris natural language system. You can just say 'Text <name> <content of message>' and Siri will do it. You can also say "Message <name> <content of message>"

I am not going to say WP7's tellme is better than Siri (because it's not) but 1. Tell me is more than WP7 and 2. Why is "Send text to XYZ" is more natural than "Text to XYZ" ?

To keep it fair, why not use it for launching apps? I only have iPhone 4 so I can't really try Siri. I mean "Siri please launch/open "4th & Mayor" is heck of a natural example. :D

Unfair comparison..the person in that video is American. It tends to be other accents these types of software fail on. Show me an Australian and well talk :p

My accent is 100% Indian(not stereotypcal but still) and WP7 works 99% of the time. The only thing it consistently fails at is "Find Rice Barn" which is a nice little Thai place near my work place. :p

A guy posted a video response to the Australian guy in the news comments on the main page and he had a thick desi accent. Tellme worked 100% perfectly.

This leads me to think maybe it just doesn't work well with Australians :p

Text <some name> works fine with WP7, wonder why he had to say "Send text to XYZ"?

This is exactly what I was thinking, TellMe uses commands to control the phone, such as "Call", "Find", "Open" and "Text". Siri uses natural language to control the phone so you can't really compare the two of them.

You can talk fluently to TellMe as well you just have to put one of the following commands, "Call", "Find", "Open" and "Text" in front what you want the phone to do.

It is the Microsoft say they're the same thing.

Exactly, this is the reason why comparing Siri to TellMe is pointless. It should also be noted that nowhere in that video does he say that TellMe is better than Siri or vice versa.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but shouldnt the device recognise what is being said even if the wrong syntax is used? It didn't even recognise what was said...

That's certainly how things work on my Android, a little pop up comes up telling me what I said, and if it doesn't recognise a command it defaults back to performing a google search which is a kind of "catch all" feature.

That's why I kinda want an iPhone now. My SGS2 uses Vlingo and it's pretty rubbish at voice recognition. I end up calling people because it doesn't recognise what I want to say in texts. A simple "call mum" is fine, but "text mum I'll be home in ten minutes" .. takes about 10 attempts to get it right, and I have to speak like a robot. Any attempt at speaking naturally is just a trainwreck. Voice Actions is better, but I can't replace Vlingo.. for some reason Samsung decided it would be a good idea to force Vlingo on people. :(

Have you tried speak to it?

First thing I thought about is I wonder how many people are now going to call or text Robin since her phone number is shown clearly in a video on YouTube?

Im about to buy a Windows Phone, I wish Microsoft though would improve TellMe and market it a little better. Ive tried it out and it works about the same as my old samsung brick phone from 5 years ago, but a little better. Apple with Siri made the voice commands a lot more natural. So Microsoft might be able to claim they were "first" but as usual they did not market it or improve it much. Siri also seems a lot quicker at responding

Nokia had speech recognition in their phones before either though - however theirs was somewhat more limited.

Microsoft have offered voice recognition in their phones since 2003. As far as I can tell Nokia have only been offering it for the last couple of years. Can you provide any links?

the Issue i see tho is the Microsoft guy in the one Video said they had Tellme in WP7 for little over year since it launched ok that is fine but (Siri) has been around since 2007-08 even in development longer the Original Team and Developers made Siri and showed it off in 2008 and relased an App so Siri has been around much longer

And? Who cares, this topic revolves around the topic of MS claiming TellMe is their own version of Siri when clearly it lacks the ability to interpret basic tasks.
