Microsoft confirms the new Windows 8 logo

Meh.. :( then again.. Its hard to come up with something other than 4 tiles to represent start. Old logo FTW but this looks better than the mockup. again. I don't know how will it hold own its own without the text

I think I need to get into graphic design and try to get my company hired by MS.... LOL

LOL yeah, the whole thing is crazy, stupid designs and did you see the woman who demoed Win 8 at CES 2012? She was a total idiot, listen to how she described the hardware in various machines, it literally made me laugh and say how the hell does this woman work for Microsoft.

If they wanted less colours they should have went with the Longhorn style Windows logo, it was simple yet elegant

edit: Example: http://www.winsupers...h_alpha_048.gif (don't look at the ugly visual style, just the Windows logo in the start button)

How is the new logo much different? They're both monochrome, and the new one just has straight edges rather than wavy, and is rotated to a slight perspective angle.

Here's the logo white on a grey background:

Personally I prefer it this way. Getting back to how the logo was originally intended to look... like a Window.. you know, like the product name. Not a flag.

The bigger version also has some shading to it if I remember correctly

Yuck. Just as yucky as metro.

Really not enjoying Microsoft nuke Windows to the ground graphically (IMO). Not as if they've ever really created anything nice (XP..... Vista..... :/), but Metro is taking things to a new level of terrible.

As much as I love Windows 7 as an operating system over Mac, I simply cannot understand why such a rich corporation can't hire decent GUI staff, or bump some from Apple.

I'm not against this logo, I do like it for the most part. It just seems odd to me that they would be going against their iconic red, green, blue, yellow color scheme. From a branding standpoint I think it would have made more sense to carry those colors over to this new logo... This one looks like a Metro version of the Azure logo to me.

I like the idea of it looking like a window, but how bout looking like a window and looking at something on the other side. Maybe making it look like a window, with panes, trim molding, and what not, and in each pane have a different application running...Internet, in one, show the calculator in another to show number crunching power, maybe show a document in another pane to show wordprocessing, and another green pane looking at a power station to show that it likes the environment or some crap like that. This would show that windows is multifunctioning operating system that has been refreshed once again.

I like the basic look though, it makes you think that they went back to basics...but going back to basics isn't what is needed in the world or for that matter really wanted.

Personally I think they should have used something similar to the WP7.5 logo

Yup, this is a simplification while retaining familiarity. I have no doubt that the general public will get used to the new one after a short while (plus Microsoft will have heavy marketing for it for sure), but I don't really see the point.

So what part of using plain solid colors is good design? Do people like going color blind or wearing monochrome-glasses for life just for fashion or fun? Let's all enforce 16-color palettes and bitmaps everywhere and enjoy!

Well I guess the reason why they didn't go with the traditional multi-colored window is because they want the entire Windows logo color to match the user's color theme. It's kinda like Windows Phone 7 where changing the theme color also changes certain tile and text colors. I think they explained this in the post.

With that said, I think the perspective on the windows clashes with the non-perspective of the text. Likewise, it'll clash with the Charm bar icons, since I believe those don't have perspective. I think taking Windows 1.0 logo would look better.
