Okay, I don't want to appear as a hurt-burt WP7 user since I poke fun at it all the time too, but, I'm quite puzzled by this lol

is it just because it's missing the flip or is there something deeper to this?

The buttons are tile-esque...

(colors, big icons, just a little short of rectengular (at least the upper 2 rows))

How does removing the flip part of the phone have anything to do with Metro?

Because they took a flip phone design that was very usable. It was also easy to hold it on your shoulder when you talk, removed it and added big buttons.
