QuarterSwede
Gabe has stated in interviews on of their freedoms due to in-house capital is to develop the game at their own pace. There is no pressure to complete it according to someone else's sales charts or deadlines. That's not what I meant. You said, They are essentially using Vivendi to outsource the distrobution of the game. Valve is the one that says when it is released, no one else. The key is, who decides when it is released is stated in the publishers agreement. That is all I meant timdorr.Enough said, I think we all know what I meant now. Well, there's a few things that could be true: A) You're right and they completely forced them to move the release date back B) Vivendi convinced them that sales would be higher if they moved it closer to christmas release and they agreed (likely) C) As indicated by the maturity of the leaked source, there were still thigns to be done, and the delay reason given was legitmate. My guess is it was a bit of B and C combined, but probably not A because that's not the agreement the two have (and Valve would have put it up on Steam if it was done and Vivendi wasn't going to release yet). GuidZilla
I REALLY don't understand everyone's complex with "some will warez, some will not" ... It HAPPENS ANYWAY. Every even slightly decent game is in the warez community before/at launch. Every game loses some cash cuz of warez, simple as that. Half-life 2 will in my prediction still do just fine assuming they don't make us wait another 5 years or somethin. The hype is too huge for this game, people are buyin hardware, literally just to play it. And like someone said earlier, HL's power is in multiplayer, thats where sales happen. Will you be able to play a pirated copy online? Probably not, very few occasions of that have happened. So those who say that pirating it is gonna sink valve into a hole need to realize that the game would be pirated no matter what, its just a factor of WHEN. Chicane-UK Veteran Posted October 7, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 7, 2003 Not getting it now. I dunno.. I have downloaded quite a few games, played the betas of some recent games (Doom III, Halo) but something about this code getting stolen has just struck some moral chord inside me. I know its a bit hypocritical considering I don't normally care too much, but I just feel very uneasy about even downloading anything to do with this stolen code. Damn those casual morals. I think the big deal about this whole situation is that it's not the game itself which was leaked (or it was, but that's not the important part) but that the source was. It's not like Valve is released the mod-kit for the game, but the very backbone of their work over the past five years is now free for anyone to see. With the leak of the pre-release or beta or alpha or whatever it is, most of the people downloading it are going to buy it anyways so its not as if Valve is losing money off the game leak, but they have a definite chance of losing money, in the long run, over the leak of the source. tronmaster
What's with the conspiracy? Do you think Valve would release the source code purposely? That's alot of bull****! This is Valve's livelihood for the past 5 years, they have been working on Half Life 2 with the income generated by Half Life and it's mods. They told us it will be release Sept. 30, 2003, for all I can tell this was the date until the code was stolen. And not only Valve's code but Havok's code. Havok can sue Valve for the release of this code. Valve could all intents go out of business due to a damaging lawsuit. And now, a frickin' Anon releases the game? This can be so damaging that Half Life 2 will never be release. People wonder why PC Games don't make money compared to Console games..... GuidZilla
I understand the issue with the source being leaked, for the sake of the programmers yes that does completely blow ass. But some people also think that the leak of the source itself will impact sales of HL2. I don 't really see how it could even make a dent. The absolute majority of people who have/will download the source will either delete it or keep it for archiving/historic reasons and never do anything with it. Why? Cuz they have no freakin clue how to lol. The source is simply that, the source, some others 5 years of HARD work and coding that the average person will not remotely understand. The only thing they gotta worry about with the source being out, is competitors 'borrowing' engine technology and such, but still HL2 is HL2, everybody and their sisters dog Fido wants this game and will buy it, assuming it comes out on a decent time scale now  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/106246-half-life-2-beta-leaked/page/8/#findComment-1233010 Share on other sites

I wouldn't blame people who categorize all leaks of incomplete material as the same thing, but to the developers, I can be quite certain, that the leak of their source code is more harmful to them than the leak of an immature game. If only the beta had leaked, Valve would be saved from tons of problems such as, no need for conflicts in release date, no need to rewrite the source code, etc..so bascially the development of the game would atleast go one not that much disturbed...compared to leakage of the source code, which would bring Valve lots of problems and loses: there is the potential of the source code being exploited(which it already has in a way), Valve can no longer make money out of selling their engine(or maybe lesser than they would have in the beginning).. initially of which they could make quite a bit of revenue from. This also brings in a potential of lesser sales of their game, I mean.. leaking of the very core of your idea does an overall damage to the whole system. It is indeed a developers' worst nightmare, and too bad it happened to valve while releasing their highly anticipated game, but then again as someone said, I wouldn't have direct access to the internet from a development computer using Outlook Express withthe preview pane on and not be careful, hell, all my computers have the preview pane in OE turned off.
