Epic, epic fail.

This man spent the better part of day trying to chop down a huge tree next to a house -- hacking away at the trunk with an ax. Unfortunately, the man clearly didn't think this one all the way through.

For some reason people think that a tree will always fall on the side that you cut it (even the host in that video makes that mistake). In reality, since its weight is never perfectly distributed, it will fall toward the heavier side.

From what I understand, loggers cut a notch on the side they want it to fall it. Then, on the other side, and higher up than the notch, they cut in straight. Might not work on trees leaning very far over, but there is a technique to it. Also, that's what cables are for.

Yeah there's definitely a standard way to do it. In some cases, even using a cable isn't considered safe. In any case, with a tree like that, I'd happily pay for some professional input to make sure.
