I am currently in Germany for the next week

If I was to buy, for example, a ?4.00 McDonald's meal here using my Barclays Visa Debit card, what would be my total charge?

The information on the Barclays website confuses me regarding small (e.g. ?4.00) purchases.

I know if I use my Australian debit card here in Austria they usually just charge me a "conversion" fee to convert AUD to EURO which is a percentage of the overall purchase (usually very small). It is only if you withdraw from a Bankomat, ATM etc that they charge you a larger fee as well as a conversion, at least with my bank.

Have you tried ringing them up?

Will cost too much from here, especially considering the waiting times.

I don't mind a small percentage charge. I am just worried there is a minimum charge, like ?2 or something.

I don't want to pay ?6 for a ?4 meal :p

Try their website... might be something there on transaction fees... you can also drop them a mail probably but that will take at least a day or two for reply.

Yeah, would take too long. I should have checked before I came out, although the trip was rather late-notice.

The website is confusing me for small fees.

If it's a Debit Card, there should be No Fee at all. I certainly don't have ANY International Charges on my Barclays Visa Debit which I frequently use in Vancouver and the UK.

I hope that's true!

Was there not an advert staring Rowan Atkinson a while ago advertising that you can use Barclaycard abroad for cash ? (EDIT - Not cash, just that you can use it abroad)

I remember him setting fire to a carpet he was carrying on his shoulder in the advert

Barclays and Barclaycard are two different things. :/

As for the charges, I think you'll just have to pay a small sum for the conversion rate. The bank likes to get their little cut. I don't think it's something you'll notice that much though. That's how it works with HSBC at least, and I expect it to be rather similar.
