I'm not sure I understand you here. Like it? Leave it on. Hate it? Turn it off (or change to another one). Simple. Plus, you don't even know what kind of backgrounds will be available in the final version.

Like I said, I did turn it off.

I think its a bad decision by Microsoft. You can't criticize a company's decisions, there always has to be a personal reason for disliking something?

Yeah I understood that. I was referring to other people who might hate the default background. And I'm almost certain that the background will change in the final version. Beta is not for those who don't know how to change it.

If you can't see the similarity it might be you with the problem.

Like I said, there are no similarities. If you want, then all OSs look like since they use squared windows/tiles. Even back in the command line days, where the cursor was a white/gray rectangle.

There are no similarities. Period.

As a web designer, I love it. I'm so sick of making those "apple style" designs (faux leather, gradients, noise textures, etc.). Simplicity FTW.

On a 4-inch screen I agree. On a 27-inch screen those solid colors become dreadful to look at.

And Windows 9 will be a brick wall background with graffiti titles 'sprayed' on it -- in keeping with the dumbing down of the USA, and the world.

While I think Windows 8 and Metro will ultimately do fine, I do agree forcing it at this time with no option to disable for boot directly to desktop is another example of dumbing down of America. Rap Music, Reality TV, now Metro on the Desktop ... smh, lol.

Third party hacks/apps will allow you to skin the Start Page. Something MS should have built in and a step backwards. Now to have a decent looking UI you have to hackapp it to death. Bring back Norton Desktop. :/

^ I agree -- someone will quickly chop off Metro screens, for those of us who do not want.

I don't know if you agree, but I think Microsoft should also drop the background image overlays on the Start Screen. The first thing I did was switch it off, just a flat color background looks better. Even a evenly textured/patterned background would look better than the overlays.

A transparent background would be best, then you'd be able to see the desktop and not get claustrophobic, but Microsoft doesn't have a god damn clue about design.

Even though metro grew on me a bit it did feel claustrophobic. I loved the easy to readness of it t It would be awesome with some font changes though... segoeui does not look good on my tv.. candara, trebuche and even tahoma looked better.

Since metro doesn't run on top of the desktop, what exactly would a transparent background do...

I think they know a lot more about design than you at any rate.

I's sure MS got thier design inspiration from a visit to chuck e cheeses.

To me, Metro looks very similar to 2001 space odyssey computer interfaces.

The use of color's, blocks, and font especially.

Where did you get the first image? I remember this site that had these along some wallpapers and a screensaver.

I like how people declare themselves "expert" on the internet.

Having a transparent start screen on top of the Desktop would overlap live tile/apps shortcut with items on the desktop. You clearly have no idea about what you are talking about :/

Just look how terribad Gnome 3 is, you'll get a good example of things not to do.
