This is insane, I have a far bigger car than you, and my insurance is under ?1000 at 25 :p

Yeah but have you only recently passed or did you pass at 17/18 and have 6 odd years of no claims....that's what makes the biggest difference.

I wouldn't suggest going as a named driver on parents' insurance. It's fine if you're just going to occasionally use their car but if you were to do get them insured as the main driver then yourself as a named driver on your own car it's illegal and risky. You also don't get to build up any no claims this way either.

Do some research into classic cars. You'd be suprised at what cars come under that catagory, often classic car specific insurance is much cheaper ironically.

Other than that put yourself as a named driver on your parents car and split the cost with them.

Risk in doing that is if you have a crash say on the way to work...insurer may not cover you...

To be a named driver, the person with the policy must be the main driver...that's not just a title on the insurance papers...they must be driving the car more than 50% of the time and you must be driving it less than 50% so if you crash on the way to work...insurers will probably be like wait a mo...your driving to work...surely you do this every weekday...thu the main not names driver...and so no payout.

damn phemo beat me to it...lol there are a few companies that will build your no claims as a named driver...but for the legality issues I wouldn't do it.

Few things I've noticed to get cheap car insurance is;

Do daily quotes on the car you have/will be getting, Save these quotes each day! Insurance company's that know you HAVE to get it on that last day will jack the prices up!!

I got a quote of ?480 and phoned up to pay and they said they couldn't find it on their system and will cost me ?700 odd I told them I want the one that cost ?480 and I have an email with a ref number. they refused this and I was told I could only get the one for ?700. Told them no thanks then. went back on their website and found a part where I can enter the ref number and got it for the cheap ?480 in the end.

Other things you can do is try adding 1 or 2 named drivers.

Phone up and tell them you're not happy and want it cheaper, I got ?500 knocked off one year by doing this.

Wait for 2month free deals.

Go for 10month insurance company's like Bell. I did this to get my no claims up quicker, although it costs slightly more monthly It was cheaper in the long run.

I also use to lie and say it was garaged.

Everyone lies when it comes to insurance :p

My first year was ?1400 - same as the car was worth.

2nd year was ?700 odd

3rd year was about ?500

It will go down.

I don't understand people who go direct.

The whole point in comparison sites was so you didn't have to type in your details 20 times, or at least that's how they started. I got a quote on confused.com for Kwikfit. Went to them direct, spent time filling in the details only to find direct they gave me a higher price!

I can see why many people don't bother to switch, but just renew when it comes around.

Often adding 3rd party fire and theft can reduce the premium. Once my insurance was ?100 less with the same company for effectively having better insurance by adding it on.

ps. lying might seem clever, but if they find out and you have an accident they can effectively invalidate your entire insurance - no matter how small the lie. Having invalid insurance is also a criminal offence.

Whilst some lies might seem minor if you have a scratch (and due to the minority of it they probably won't inspect you)... if you have a bigger accident that closes a motorway and kills someone and brings with it huge costs that can run into hundreds of thousands or even millions, they'll do everything they can to blame you and not pay out, and leave you getting sued and arrested. If they can invalidate your insurance once you have an accident they will.

Obvious lies are most likely to get you caught out... eg. If you don't own an garage I'd suggest you don't say it's kept in a garage. If you don't live with your parents, don't say they are the main driver etc. It doesn't matter how disconnected it i from the accident - your insurance will still be invalid.

Some insurers will give you cheaper deals if you go direct because they ask for information not covered by the comparison site's forms. They also don't have to pay a referral fee.

Yes but classic car insurance deals usually don't accumulate no claims bonus. Unless you plan on exclusively driving classics then you're better off jumping in and building NCB as soon as possible.

I'm with Elephant.co.uk, and they're pretty cheap for young male drivers. They also do a 10-month deal to get a full no claims bonus (can't be transferred). This helps to build up quick no claims with Elephant to lower insurance costs.

I passed my test at 20, but only bought my first car at 22. My insurance was ?1300 for the first year (Vauxhall Corsa, 56 plate, 1.0L, base model) It then went down to ?1100 the following year, but has gone up to ?1400 because I had a low-speed accident last year (went into the back of someone).

The short answer is, if you want to drive, you have suck it up and take the hit to your bank balance. It's frigging expensive. Add on the costs for petrol at ?1.40 per litre, plus tax and MOT.

Whats your budget for a car? and how old are you?

If your budget is decent get something german, Audi A6, BMW 5 series - Around 1994 year, or something like a VW Passat 1998.

Do an insurance quote and I bet it goes down, as these cars are safer, have better security, less of a theft target and chavs don't drive them.

My first car was a 1992 Audi a6 2.0, I was 18 years old and my insurance full comp was ?750 (circa)

Try DirectLine (who I'm with) seem very reasonable prices, but not on comparison sites, but if you find a price on a comparison site, always go to their website and do another one 10-20% of the time it's cheaper!
