bobthetechguy
I am setting up a rather insane wrt54G. I bought this router back in 2006 and flashed it with dd-wrt back in 2008.Recently I started playing around with maxing out the output power and overclocking, 251mw, and it starts over heating. So heres a old heatsink of a core2quad and an 80mm fan to supplement it. Im going to order some crimp on TNC connectors so I can mount the anteanna higher up, like in my attic etc. Right now my range on this router, while sitting it outside on my 2nd story deck with a large tree in the way, I'm getting a range of about half mile. Why the insane range im wanting you might ask? I work about half mile away from my house, and want to have wifi at work so I dont have to use my phones 3g data, and it works pretty good.... just drops out sometimes. {TLDR}where could i get some TNC connectors? and can i connect them to some COAX cable so i could place the anteanna up like outside edge of my atttic? remixedcat 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/ Share on other sites
bobthetechguy
sorry for giant pics, forgot how to resize, havent ever posted to a forum since the 56k warning days Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939265 Share on other sites
Hum
I don't see the point -- seems like a big fire hazard. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939271 Share on other sites
bobthetechguy
Half mile range with 54G ? Also another feature is, well if I'm traveling and there isn't a "free wifi hotspot " where I'm staying with a good enough signal I can fire this router up with the script to repeat, and repeat that wifi. For example the last house I lived in, I never paid for Internet because there was a McDonald's down the street and for 2 years I just "borrowed" the Internet. It's just for a "I hacked this piece of hardware all to hell and I'm proud of my creation" type of post Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939279 Share on other sites
Raa
I've used WRT54GL's for a long time at some of the places I work at. They're great with DD-WRT! Can't say i've overclocked or gone for that much wireless range though... :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939281 Share on other sites
~Johnny
Imagine the sort of range you could get if you done this with an N band router, WiFi for half the neighbourhood :p (...okay, I don't know N-band would make any difference but I assume it may) Although, are those waves actually safe for your health at those levels? I imagine they're quite a bit more powerful / concentrated than usual around your home :p (again, excuse my ignorance with everything todo with radio waves) bobthetechguy 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939285 Share on other sites
bobthetechguy
I once duct taped it to a pole on my roof with a parabolic reflector, went and tested range withy iPhone.... About 4thousand feet , then beyond that it was hit or miss for connectivity, that's why I'm wanting to know if I could just crimp some TNC connectors onto a coax cable that way I could just stick the antennas outside in like a plastic bottle upside down for weatherproofing and have the router inside, that way I could turn the power BACK DOWN to [11] Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939293 Share on other sites

bobthetechguy
Johnny , I've considered it. ... Japlabot
Typically you would use Amplifiers and directional/high gain antennas to get that sort of distance rather than cook the hardware. I'm surprised it has worked for this long, but if it works, it works. remixedcat 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939301 Share on other sites

bobthetechguy
Simon, I'm a cheap **** , I just kinda threw together stuff that was in my "big box of pc hardware". I already own a nice high end $150 netgear dual band N router, I just did this for the heck of it. And yes, it's ran like this for 4 years now and hasn't even showed signs of failure. This should be a success story for linksys rock solid routers, Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1084881-possibly-the-most-insane-wifi-router-mod-you-will-see-all-month/#findComment-594939319 Share on other sites
