ANova
This thing has been bugging me. My device manager says I have a fantom device running on PCI bus 0, device 29, function 7. I've had this since I got the comp about a year and a half ago and never bothered with it. But now I thought maybe you guys could help me figure out wth it is. All my hardware has been running fine and i've never had any problems btw. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/109265-unknown-device/ Share on other sites

Banjo
What cards do you have? Tried cleaning the mother board? Maybe it's faulty and it's somehow making it seem like theres another device  Very odd problem indeed. ANova
It does look like a usb related device. But my computer only has 4 ports and support for six are already installed as shown in the picture below. Odd indeed. pjak
@echo off set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1 devmgmt.msc save the above text as a batch file (eg devmgr.bat) in notepad. run/open it. it will run device manager in a special mode. double click (left button) the device, then choose the details tab, scroll to hardware ids, and then compatible ids. post or pm me what it says. it will make it easier to find an inf for the device, or at least know what it is. EDIT: I bet it's a usb2.0 part of the system (a usb2.0 controller has two circuits, one for usb1 and another for usb2, both show as seperate devices and each need drivers). Have you installed XP SP1 and/or mobo drivers? ANova
I installed all the mobo drivers but i'm not sure if that includes the usb 2.0 driver, and I do not have SP1. Through the above method I got the following. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/109265-unknown-device/#findComment-1276836 Share on other sites
pjak
ok I know for sure, it is this: "Intel? 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD" found in the usbport.inf (in Windows XP SP1, or Windows 2003). simply open device manager (normal mode is fine), open the device properties (double click) and click "Enable Device". close device properties, then device manager. now download SP1 (link below, 134 MB) and install (either open/run or slipsteam (my preferred choice) and do repair from boot). http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/4...sp1a_en_x86.exe don't install the usb2.0 hotfix, this device is not supported. any problems, pm me! ANova
Thanks for the help pjak. I don't want to install SP1 though, for my own personal reasons. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/109265-unknown-device/#findComment-1278628 Share on other sites
pjak
Just thought of an alternative. Either, disable usb2.0 in the bios and the device will not be shown, read help here, or do the following: If for whatever reason you don't want SP1, but want the usb 2.0 part of your system functioning, download the following two files. ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/ly/USB2.0.exe (1.08 mb) ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/...ly/USBXPfix.exe (6.69 mb) This is the Intel version of Microsoft's USB 2.0 HotFix, for Windows XP without SP1. It supports your device, guaranteed! Simply run/open the first file (usb2.0.exe) to install, then the setup should prompt you for Q312370_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe (extract it from EN folder in the second file, USBXPfix.exe). if it does not prompt you, install it anyway. then reboot and enjoy. however, I strongly recommend you install SP1 instead. EDIT: before starting enable the device as I desctibed before: simply open device manager (normal mode is fine), open the device properties (double click) and click "Enable Device". close device properties, then device manager.
