Titoist
Hey all. This summer I have been getting involved with a lot of outdoor sports. I think I have ADD.... not sure, lol. Got my boating license, fishing license and now I am studying for my firearms license. I have gone fishing for over 10 years and always had my trusty $40 Shimano rod and reel combo. It broke. Today I bought a Abu Garcia "Vendeta" 7ft rod and a Shimano Sonora 2500FB reel. I haven't tested them yet, but I also don't know if it is any good since I don't pay particular attention to brands. What I want to know is how many Neowinians fish, and what tools/brands do you use? Do you prefer fishing from a boat or the shore? I am a shore person myself... can't afford a boat. Also if you don't fish, what do you like doing and what are your tools. Lets make this the official "Sporting" thread. DocM
I fish using rood & reel (spin and fly), bow and arrow, and a weapon many may have never heard of - the atlatl. The atlatl is a spear throwing stick that dates back to pre-history, fully capable of propelling a light spear or arrow up to 200-300 yards at speeds up to 150 mph. My dad and uncle started me on the atlatl when they taught me the bow - age 8 (and I'm 63 now.) We can't yet hunt game with them, but are treying to get it allowed during the archery deer and small game seasons. Below is a video showing adults and kids practicing the atlatl at an indoor range near Ann Arbor, Michigan. Are there guidelines to using a Atlatl? DocM
Crazy and deadly as hell with the proper points, say a razor blade sharp bowhunting broadhead with 4-6 blades or a bowfishing harpoon head. Tip: practice, practice, then more practice ;) First: check with Ontario's DNR before using it to hunt or fish. Laws vary widely. You can use the 'arrow thrower' style sticks with 31"+ arrows with their nock inserts removed, so long as the atlatl's hook is sized & shaped properly (larger diameter, shorter & more rounded.) Cheap adult size 45-60 lb arrows are fine - you'll never pressure them as much as a compound bow does and they come with arrow/harpoon head inserts installed. For longer spears some use straightened cane, wood, or arrow blanks epoxy bonded together using an undersized aluminum joiner (careful aligning them!) The same reducer trick can be used to size the business end of cane down enough to accept archery arrow/harpoon head inserts too (often the right size is already available as arrow diameters vary.) Fletching (the vanes/feathers) can be pre-installed on an arrow blank, glued on using archery vanes & gear, or you can tie them on neolithic style (see last video.) Some are sellers, but they have some historican and use stuff - http://www.atlatl.com/ http://www.thunderbirdatlatl.com/ http://www.primitive...atl_branch.html http://www.atlatl.co...tlatl-darts.php PaleoPlanet forums, a good repository of ancient technologies. Riggers
Love my carp fishing and would love to have a bash at the St Lawrence river, sounds like it`s a beautiful place. For me Shimano make some of the best tackle, allways seems decent quality. Here`s a pick of me with a recent catch. Hope you`ll be bagging em soon :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1095243-fishing-and-other-outdoor-sports-hunting-boating-etc/#findComment-595055421 Share on other sites
