sc302 Veteran Posted August 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 10, 2012 that looks all good. something is wrong with dns. I would need to see your dns server properties on each server. you can mask your fqdn if you want, I don't need that.
sickem
ok just tell me where to get the properties. also can i raise the domain and forest level in the 03 server without disrupting any clients?
sc302 Veteran Posted August 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 10, 2012 yes raising will not require any reboots, it is strictly an ad db thing. right click on a domain and properties on the domains, will need both servers.

sc302 Veteran Posted August 13, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 13, 2012 something is not right on the 08 server. i just don't have the time right now to setup a test environment so you are going to have to do it the other way. remove the dns zones out of the 08 server. set the primary dns back to the 03 server on the 08 server. and then run dcpromo, I hate doing it this way because I get a mixed fail rate doing this. If you continue to run into issues I highly advise you hire someone for this, it isn't that difficult to do and this is taking way too long. sickem
would it be wise to name my new server the same as the 03 server or will that not matter?

sickem
ok thanks, Even when i try it your other way it still gives me the dns error. and i cant check the dns services box either What the hell is this all about?
sc302 Veteran Posted August 14, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2012 Without seeing your servers, I am at a loss. this isn't that difficult of a process. it is along the lines of tying your shoes, but I don't know if you are trying to tie your shoes with laces from a pair of shoes that don't belong to you that are attached to another person. sickem
lol... i did some digging and Ive seen that 08 server sometimes wont let you add a DC if the domain you're adding to is only 1 name . For example mine is austinair And from what they are saying it should be austinair.com or . local .... Does that make sense to you?
sc302 Veteran Posted August 14, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2012 that would be correct. After taking another look at your screen shots (wasn't looking at your domain names), I dont know how in the world someone set that up like that. It would have produced all sorts of red flags during the setup process. Now you have a much more difficult process a head of you. http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=19188 Or you rebuild from scratch. sickem
ok with this tool it looks like i install it on the 03 server and follow the prompts?... will this create downtime my good friend? scratch that ... it looks like id be better off staring anew... any process info you can give me on that?
sc302 Veteran Posted August 15, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 15, 2012 It would not create much noticable downtime other than the downtime to convert pcs from one domain to the other but it requires a lot of testing and time to get it right. There is a reason that there is a 250 page document on how to do it, it isn't because it is point and click followed by moronic drooling as the software completes the job for you..it actually requires you do something. as far as building from scratch, it is exactly as it sounds, create a new domain and policies and migrate everything over manually. disjoining the computers from the old network, rejoining the computers to the new network, moving all of the data, creating the shares, reapplying permissions, resetting the profiles on each computer to use the old profile from the old domain for the users, etc etc.
sickem
so is there a way to copy over users and permissions ( robocopy maybe?) what do you mean about reseting to use the old profile from the old domain .. do you mean new??
