Use Search as an example or accessing the Control Panel if you want I don't care. Windows 8 is a total mess for anyone lacking a touch screen and you know the reviews for it are going to be terrible you'd have to be blind not to see that. d4rk5ky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/28/#findComment-595083939 Share on other sites
Keyboard Cowboy
The negatives definitely outweigh the positives for me, so ill be sticking with 7 until 9 comes out or until support for 7 ends. You realize what Windows 9 will be right? It's adorable how so many of you have this OS pegged for failure. Vice
You realize what Windows 9 will be right? It's adorable how so many of you have this OS pegged for failure. You know sometimes dumbing down the computer experience such as with Microsoft Bob or Offices Clippy doesn't work and later versions of the product remove these things and give us back the experience we had before they existed. If Windows 8 is not well received and it doesn't sell well and Windows 7 market share continues to eclipse 8, if Consumers start demanding computers with Windows 7 instead of Windows 8 then Microsoft will turn about heel and change where Windows 9 is headed. Another thing to think about is if Windows 8 on Tablets is a failure (which is a real possibility if they can't get enough hardware partners on board) they may decide to split Windows 9 down the middle. One would be a Windows 7 like experience on x86 based processors and the other would only come with Metro without any desktop at all and would be for ARM only processors which would be used exclusively with Tablets. This could happen nothing is written in stone yet and it depends how the market plays out. Another possibility is that only Windows 8 ARM based tablets sell in volume and Microsoft again decides to drop Metro on x86. One of the biggest hurdles they have when fighting the iPad and Android tablets is price and I don't think they can match those other devices on Price with x86 systems. abysal 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/28/#findComment-595083945 Share on other sites

Vice
Funny how that isn't written in stone.... But that apparently is... Yes that is correct. Anything could happen on tablets because Metro is an interface designed for Tablets. Microsoft do not dispute that. But it is a total mess on desktops, we already have it on our desktops and can already see how much of a mess it is. Extremely inconsistent, jarring to the extreme and makes traditional efficient workflows inefficient. It is uncompromising and difficult to use, even confusing. They take the contents of one menu (Bottom left start menu) and break it up in to two separate menus (Start Screen -> Bottom Left, Charm Menu -> Top Right). Many changes that make perfect sense if you have a tablet with a touch screen designed for swiping from a thick edge border on to the displays touch sensor but make no sense at all when used with a physical mouse and keyboard. Gestures have never taken off and never become popular on desktop systems when used with a hardware mouse (only with touch interfaces like trackpads and touch screens) because it is much more intuitive to navigate the interface when using a cursor by moving that cursor to an object and clicking on it. Now everything is hidden out of view and you have to perform these swipes with your cursor to get to functionality that was before behind a click. And you know everything I said in my second post was about tablets and I clearly said in my first post that it's a total mess for anyone lacking a touch screen. The two statements compliment each other they do not contradict. +Warwagon MVC Posted August 12, 2012 MVC Share Posted August 12, 2012 Or you know, use the power button. Support : Ok take your finger and press the power button once with your finger on the front of the computer. Customer: Ok I did that and the screen went black and the power button is blinking. Support: Ok now press the power button again to turn the computer back on. This time the computer should boot back up Customer: Ok I pressed the power button and my screen came back with all my icons Support: Already? Wow that was fast. Customer: It didn't boot up it just appeared. Support: Oh it must have just gone to sleep. The default configuration of the power button on most computers is not to turn off but to sleep the machine. d1glow
Zero reasons to upgrade... I mean ZERO.. If I wanted to make my life more complicated there are other ways I can do it... this Frankenstein of an OS is a disaster. Sticking to Windows 7. Your kidding right? how can u you say that an OS is garbage when its not even out yet. and stating that it out performs windows 7 if every kind of way. hahahaha I think your garbage for saying that! but that's cool you can stick with that vista garbage of an OS they call Windows 7 while im in the fastlane with windows 8 :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/28/#findComment-595083965 Share on other sites

I know in this thread I have mentioned Apple and Mac OS X Mountain Lion a lot and I've gotten some heat for keep bringing it up. But if you look at how users have responded to Mountain Lion's changes you can see that they love it across the board. Potential customers love it, current customers love it. It provided like Windows 8 a faster boot up and shutdown and generally feels faster and it added new Apps like iMessage that let you message iPhones for free over the internet. It also brought notification centre and a bunch of other features. No one is complaining about Mountain Lion it has received universal praise across the board from users and reviewers. Why couldn't Windows 8 been like that? Has anyone noticed that since about Windows XP that Microsoft has mostly stopped adding new applications to the OS? They added Notepad, Paint, Calculator. These are useful applications but since about XP apps like these have not been included in the OS. In-fact they even removed a lot of apps since Windows XP. Apps like built in messaging. Metro now has Apps like Messaging which should have been desktop apps in Vista or Windows 7. If Microsoft had included the Weather App, Stocks, Messages, A new Photo gallery system and other features like that as desktop applications shipping with the OS I think that would have pleased current users enough. The Windows 7 desktop is very powerful and it works great it just needed a few tweaks and some fresh applications in my opinion. For a start there a lot of people complaining about Mountain Lion, about how it doesn't even feel like a proper upgrade because it doesn't change anything in any substantial way, whilst still obsoleting a whole bunch of perfectly good machines. Surprisingly enough, Microsoft stopped adding apps to the OS about the same time as the Anti-trust case came to a head, because frankly they aren't immune from being sued for application bundling (Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player to name just two) like other OS vendors. Aren't there a bunch of browser makers moaning (to the EU) about the fact that you can't install an alternative browser on the RT desktop, yet you've never been allowed to install one on an iPad (you can rechrome the Safari webkit engine all you like though). JaredFrost
However, that's not an excuse to stick your own head in the sand (and yes - I *have* done support; in fact, i still do). Learning in IT is a constant - hardware AND software; the day you stop learning (or wanting to learn) in IT is the day you should find a new profession. "Keep up or get run over!" is not new (I learned that mantra back in the pre-PC days of mainframes and green-screen terminals); however, how many people in IT (especially software or support) bothered to remember why? A lot of words for not really saying anything and I have no idea why it's directed at me, just because someone doesn't like something and wont purchase it for themselves, does not mean they wont learn how to use and support it But in a corporate setting, I wont have to support it, because businesses are unlikely to adopt this, and MS knows this, that's not the point of Windows 8, they're just trying to use their market position to strongarm their way into the mobile market, you need to get over yourself.
