n_K
Just a quick question but if they're unifying windows 8 to have the same kinda thing for desktop, laptop, server, tablet, phone and 'surface' device, does this mean that if a large adminstrator-account access exploit is discovered, that ALL the OS's will be vulnerable? I guess it'll depend upon what the exploit is, but it'd be a hella bad for them. WP 7.5 doesn't have piracy issues or hacking issues afaik but when W8's released, surely that's going to change, very rapidly? But at the same time, it means all devices can be patched at the same time. Basically, no different than it is now. BajiRav
Sorry, but I still think it looks terrible. Nothing of your doing though. OS X Mountain Lion's Launchpad looks so much cleaner and nicer in my opinion. No customization beyond moving all third-party apps onto a second page. Here's a screen shot of both pages @ 50% original size: Well I find that dull, boring and nothing more than an expanded folder view minus the window chrome :/ The metro screen you commented on was equally dull for lack of most live tiles. I am not sure why one is better than the other. It may be the background that the other guy set but that's about it. Side note: Do I notice mismatched icon styles in that launchpad? :p couple of different perspectives going on if I am not mistaken. So looks like Microsoft is not alone. I am not sure why one is better than the other. It may be the background that the other guy set but that's about it. IMO it looks better because there aren't these pointless solid boxed behind it and I'm not confronted with icons from different eras. In the end I didn't have to spend much time to get the above result. Apparently with Windows 8 people need tips in order to make things look remotely presentable. Launchpad also isn't my start screen. That's still the desktop itself. The Start screen will look okay once everything is covered by Live Tiles / Metro Tiles. Side note: Do I notice mismatched icon styles in that launchpad? :p couple of different perspectives going on if I am not mistaken. So looks like Microsoft is not alone. Icons can either have a "front on" appearance or slanted, nothing new about that. In the end all icons have a photorealistic appearance, which is OS X' style. Microsoft is alone in the sense I don't see System 7, Mac OS 9 and OS X styled icons in my Launchpad (to translate things to Mac). garwin 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/12/#findComment-595069761 Share on other sites

I wish you could remove apps from launchpad instead of just shoving them in a folder. When I installed CS6 it took up like half a launchpad screen. :/ I don't really like most of the metro backgrounds. IMO a solid color looks better. efjay
Not sure how a bunch of icons beats the Start screen that conveys information at a glance. ahhell 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/12/#findComment-595069935 Share on other sites
Titanium_NX
I waited for Windows 8, didn't bother trying betas as I wanted to see what would be the experience when finished. I had high hopes for Window 8 but my gut feeling told me something wasn't right the moment I read the start menu was gone. Lots of people are say 'move on" we don't need it as its holding the OS back, to those I say ADD A DAMN OPTION FOR BOTH MICROSOFT. The OS has always been about the user experience! Cannot experienced being forced to use a navigation system that feels like Windows 95 graphics mixed with concepts After using the OEM myself for a few days I'm at a lost of what Microsoft was thinking. I've been using pc's since Windows 3.1 and every Windows has been a development and progress. While some OS failed like VISTA, I"d take Vista over 8 anyday. Good luck selling this to companies. I know for sure in my IT department of 2500 people we will NEVER upgrade to this POS. Jygoro
The Windows team really doesn't care for detail or they simply lack the expertise. They roughly implemented the general idea and pretty much stopped there. Ignorance has its limits, you know. paperless
Why open a different thread about this? Reminds me of those who open threads on the WoW forums to tell people they're quitting WoW. Windows 8 isn't that different, what did you do with the start button that you can't do now? It's even easier to launch programs, use the search future. Like on Mac OS (with Spotlight) it's super fast to open a program you're looking for. Either way I'm happy to know Linux will have more supporters as my wet dream is for Windows, Linux and Mac OS to have a 33.3333....% market share. .Neo
Ignorance has its limits, you know. What I see is a Windows Vista styled icon in a Metro environment. It kinda supports the whole notion of Microsoft not caring much about detail. scaramonga
Metro is horrible on Xbox also - it's a marketing department's dream and that's about it. It is HORRID. +1 Yup, you only need to look as far as the Xbox (which ain't that far really) to know that Windows has taken a big step into a bleak future indeed, at its current state. I've said it before on here, and I'll say it again, I'm willing to bet my HOUSE (all bought and paid for) on Windows 8 failing, never a safe bet, but guaranteed in this case, unfortunately, for MS. I really wish things were a lot different, but I fear the worst here. Sarah Beland
OMG really, what a bunch of whiners. seriously. don't upgrade. It surprises me how many tech enthusiast here are so reluctant to adapt and not comprehend Windows 8 is a step closer or vision of a new computing future. The landscape is changing, accept it or fall behind. Microsoft spends millions/billions on R&D/focus groups, they didn't just pull this out of their butts. Your going to look pretty stupid in 5 years from now when the line between techies and grandmas blur. With Windows 8 I'm now confident that my grandma won't need to call me every week to ask, how do you send a file in email? How do you print...? etc.., Metro and touch user interface will be everywhere on every device, the symphony of unifying a standard OS (Metro) throughout all devices is risky but brilliant! After some time, no one will want to use any other OS on any device they buy. Yeah, some things are wonky, I know, nothing is ever perfect, however, just because Windows 7 was a big big success, that does not mean it's the best. Windows 7 is ill suited for the up-coming changes to our computer world. I know you're peed off because you bought into the epenis way of thinking, you like 8 cores, 12 GB of ram, chrome everywhere, right clicking...etc....etc...etc... dinosaurs!!!! You people with 30" monitors with 8 windows open calling it multitasking is laughable because you are 5 percent of Microsoft's future market. However, again, the desktop is there as always, go power user, stick to the past. Co-ords
Win8 is just a dreadful OS, end of story! I just cant get used to that nasty metro stuff. Its just a money thing, and we are the suckers that are forced into buying it... I wont, EVER! I use Win7 daily at work, and quite like it actually, but I stop at Win8... As a system admin, I will NEVER recommend it to anyone or install it. Scorbing
dudes I just deleted that garbage from my laptop. I had enough. Been trying to use it and find anything that may be useful since 2am last night and I am done. Can't even write an email on Gmail because I get some weird texting error on IE...LOL This interface is horrid. All the Windows fanboys will say otherwise and use it, but people with common sense and professionals will know better. This is the end of Windows for me. Once Windows 7 support is done, if Windows 9 is as horrid as Windows 8 then I guess it's going to be Apple and Linux from now on. neo1911 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096309-windows-8-is-the-first-os-that-made-me-downgrade/page/12/#findComment-595070185 Share on other sites
