neoadorable
it will have quad HD native, for sure - 2560 x 1440. i can live with that until 4K becomes a reality. tho i suspect the new consoles will be able to upscale to 4K, even if it won't look any different from QHD. LaP
I don't get the reasoning behind the (fan created) name "Xbox 720" It's twice as much as a 360? It can do 720p? etc. I think it's a sarcastic name. The name XBox 360 was not really logical to begin with. LaP
I would argue that it is the wrong time entirely for Microsoft or Sony to release a new console. 1080p's reign is about to end, 4k's is about to start. You're kidding right? Do you know that most of 360 games are not 1080p ? Lot of them are 720p and the image is upscaled by the console in real time to output 1080p. Some of them are even under 720p resolution. Some of them are actually running a 540p resolution (Alan Wake was one of them i think). If you ever saw a game running in real 1080p at a constant fps and with slight aa and aniso enabled you can clearly see the difference with the supposed 1080p mode of the 360. A good PC right now can strugle to output real 1080p at a constant 60fps with aa, aniso, hdr and tesselation enabled when it comes to the best looking games on the market. Next generation wont be strong enough to run 4k not even close to it. It will take years for 4k TV to be common enough to worth it. Anyway next generation will barely be enough powerful to do real 1080p at 60fps with all the bells and whistles next generation of consoles will bring. What I have been saying, and absolutely agree 110%. No way in hell will this next gen will have games in 4k. Absolutely zero. I stick by this for sure. The one and only thing that may, and it is a small may, support 4k, is the dashboard itself. That is it. Right now only pretty damn high end GPU's can run games at 4k (4096 x 2160) and their cost is that of an entire console and then some. And in some instances they do not even get 30 FPS depending on graphics settings. So yeah, just do not see it happening purely based on logic, never mind adoption rate, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096653-microsoft-finally-admits-to-xbox-720/page/3/#findComment-595115423 Share on other sites

Colin McGregor
And there's nothing wrong with Xbox 720. i would be annoyed it it'd be called anything else, the name Xbox 360 grew on me so much, it's practically part of my DNA now. What's wrong with 720? it's two nice round ones. like this: Once you think of 720 like those lovely parts of dear Ms. Kasumi, there's no going back  I hope your kidding and don't actually find pixels sexy, I weep for you if you do. So yeah, just do not see it happening purely based on logic, never mind adoption rate, etc. Also those high end multi gpus setup are able to run current games at high def. But current games are not optimized to use the power that those multi gpus setup offer (and not optimized for such high resolution). It's highly unlikely that those multi gpus setup will be able to run next gen games at the same resolution with all the high quality settings enabled. The question is what do we really want. Current quality of gfx at 4k Or next gen gfx at 1080p. For me the choice is obvious i'm going for next gen gfx at 1080p. One day 1080p wont be enough (not too far from now). There's a limit of what you can do in real time (not render) with 1080 vertical pixels when it comes to the details of the gfx. I'm not a big fan of those blurry new aa settings i prefer to use a subtle aa setting. But i don't think we are curently close enough to this limit to make it worth running 4k when you consider the cost involved. I'm perfectly fine with my 1080p 32" HDTV (that i use as a monitor) and i think there's plenty of room left with this resolution for now. PC games look great and way better than 360 games on my HDTV. My 6950 is rushing a bit though i'll need to upgarde to a 670 when the price will be down to close 200$. It remembers me the first time i ran a game at 1024x768 resolution (can't recall which game it was). It looked really crisp but the screen was really empty and void of the details needed to exploit this resolution at its full potential. Current hardware might be able to do 4k. But current hardware surely are not able to do real 4k with all the details you can fit in such a high resolution. neoadorable
was not kidding colin, i find pixels definitely sexy. do you not find images of scantily clad women sexy? you're an "only the real thing" kinda guy? you must be very fortunate to have hordes of barely-clothed and proportionally-perfect women lining up for a shot, pun intended. regarding the naming, i don't think it's just the media...pretty much confirmed it will be the name. i mean when it was in a movie that was basically paid for by Microsoft (Bing Arena, anyone?), then that says a lot. on the resolution debate, i believe the new consoles will have Eyefinity-like tech that will allow multi-screen gaming, but obviously no native 4K. maybe upscaling. they will definitely be capable of QHD native. i think most of you are jaded young people, you fail to appreciate that the games you play on consoles are running on tech from almost a decade ago with max 512MB available. and while they don't look as good as the PC versions, they give them a good run for their money. it's amazing what they've been able to get out of those two old gals. testman
The naming of "Xbox 720" in a film was clearly an inside joke, not intended of outing the actual name of the next console. Joke ads in films that invoke imagery of current products are done all the time and in no way imply that it's the official name of the next product. I really wish people would stop using the silly "720" moniker. Before the 360, people were calling the supposed new Microsoft console the Xbox 2 just because Sony were naming their sequel consoles with numbers. neoadorable
that was not a joke, that was fully approved by MS. are you kidding me, you think they'd allow that in a major release? you also think the Bing Arena with Bing logo and search imagery all over it was an unauthorized inside joke? yeah and all cars in Matrix Reloaded being GM's was a happy coincidence :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1096653-microsoft-finally-admits-to-xbox-720/page/3/#findComment-595132325 Share on other sites
testman
Obviously it was fully approved by Microsoft, but for all we know it's just a joke logo. Many companies have jokey logos based on real-world properties in films, in particular films that aren't set in the present day. The presence of the Xbox 720 logo isn't any proof that it's an official name of any new console. If your criteria for "official imagery" is the appearance of one in a film, then that'd make Terminator 2 starring Sylvester Stallone official (as one of many examples) or Jaws 19 - clearly that's not true whatsoever. neoadorable
sorry it took a while to reply. i'm not being argumentative, but i assume you're referring to Last Action Hero? that was clearly satire, there was nothing satirical about the Bing Arena sequence in Real Steel. anyway, it doesn't matter, i like the name 720 just as i got used to 360, if they call it something else, that's fine too. but i would not dismiss 720 as an impossibility like some do. That would be a waste of effort. Most TVs people have max out at 1920x1080, and most people won't be buying a new TV for the next 5-10 years. There's no point in wasting any effort making a console with anything higher than 1080p support when most people won't have TVs that take advantage of it and the Xbox 360 and PS3 had to upscale to 720P, and almost none of the titles did 1080P native. They're better off putting together a system that can consistently run 1080P@60FPS+ for every title they throw at it, and worry about higher resolutions for the next gen. migo
I don't think it will be that prevalent. People have just started buying HDTVs in significant number with the price dropping to around $500. 4K TVs will cost $2000+. Not many people will be buying them. Hell, the PS3 had some issues at launch with people not having HDTVs and the text being miniscule on the TVs people did have. George P Global Moderator Posted September 18, 2012 Global Moderator Share Posted September 18, 2012 I'm 90% sure it won't be a number, not with the changes they've started doing with the "Xbox" brand. The new system will have it's own name, to make it stick out from all the other parts of Xbox. I mean, you look at the list and Xbox now covers a number of things when before it used to just be 2. Xbox Live Xbox Music Xbox Video Add to the fact that you have Xbox on the phone and PC now, which gives us. Xbox for Windows Xbox for Windows Phone. The new console will have a name, like what Sony did with the Vita, along those lines. So, Xbox "something" It could be an abbreviation of a 2 or 3 words together also. Then going forward they'll just use that name so you know they're talking about the console hardware itself within the context of the bigger Xbox entertainment brand.
