Video Game Virgin: What's the first game you remember playing?

Recommended Posts

Tying back to an article on Neogamr where staff members talk about their first video game experience, we'd like to hear what YOUR first time was like. :)

Feel free to share stories, memories, pictures, links, whatever! :)

Well, for a console, add me to the Pong list. First computer game would either be Pyramid 2000 on a TRS-80 Model 1 or Advent (Colossal Cave) on a DEC VAX.. forget which I got to first, it's been so long I don't remember, and yes I know they're essentially the same thing.

The first game I remember playing was Thomas The Tank Engine on the Commodore 64. I used to love it but one if the things that you had to do was avoid obstacles on the tracks but half the time when an obstacle appeared there were no signals to change track so it was more luck than anything. Still loved it though, so many good memories of my brother and me playing it.

I honestly cannot remember my first game. If I were to guess I would say it was probably something on an early Atari console (my neighbours as I was never allowed to own a console), maybe a tanks type game or something.

Thats the best I can think of as a likely game as I remember my neighbour owning an old atari style console thing, might even have been a cheapo make.

But then thats over 20 years of gaming ago, I could probably pick up doom and remember the way round most of the maps (I can remember exactly what to do for Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle) but I can't really remember my first :D

I don't recall the first game I remember playing, but it was most likely on a TI 99-4a computer. We had several games that we played on it from Munchman, Space Invaders, Centipede, and many others in the early 1980s.

PacMan - my parents always used to take me to the same hotel in Magaluf. The Hotel Barbados, part of a chain called Sol. They were very family friendly, and I recall them having 2 arcade machines near the pool table. One being Space Invaders and the other being PacMan. I remember my father teaching me PacMan strategy rather than just wandering around aimlessly for pills. I didn't play Space Invaders, as I was scared of the noise it made, and the Invaders themselves freaked me out. My nan used to take me to a bar (Snoopy's Bar) that had a crazy golf course. They also had a Donkey Kong machine, and as a prize for winning the crazy golf, I was allowed a go. I remember us wondering why it was called "Donkey" Kong. On the last day of the holiday, we had time to spare after packing but before heading to the hotel - so my Granded took me to another bar that had a Grand Prix game, where you used a steering wheel to drive. I thought it was the best thing ever - I felt like I was driving a real car.

Pong was also my first console game, though that was overtaken by many hours spent playing Pitfall and Donkey Kong on my Intellivision.

Loved the Intellivision back in the day. Well hated the controllers, especially those stupid plastic overlay inserts, loved the games. Bomb Squad, Night Stalker and Dungeons & Dragons kept me pretty busy as a kid.

I'm not exactly sure, but it's either Duck Hunt or Marble Madness for the NES. I remember going to the store to pick up the NES and the Zapper though... Man I was really young them as well.

I think it's actually Duck Hunt. Marble Madness was still brilliant though.

I guess 'video' implies non text based games.. (Played a lot of the old infocom games on TRS-80 back in the day)

pong of course for played on television..

misc ti-99 and c64/vic 20 games

all the atari/intellivision/colecovision stuff.. everyone's first atari game had to be either pong or combat right? :)

now for PC's .. skipping again the infocom/text based since this thread is 'video' games..

played a lot of free/shareware games.. anyone remember sopwith?

first commerical PC "Video" game was Dr. J vs Larry Bird one on one

Oh man, arcades, how could I have forgotten to mention that? I played the absolute crap out of Gauntlet!

VALKYRIE NEEDS FOOD BADLY!

WIZARD SHOT THE FOOD

Pong on Atari 2600 was pretty much my first ever game I think, but after that I saved and saved my pocket money and bought myself a commodore 64 which my favourite game was Zamzara (just a simple side scroller along the lines of Turrican).

Oh wow I'd almost forgotten about arcades. I'm not sure what the first game I played, but I bet the ones at any bowling alley or cinema complex are still the exact same ones. >.> They never, ever, ever get updated. lol.

I think it was Defender.

Oh, and I used to play text games in Primary school as well, I don't remember the names of them though.. which is a shame. All I remember is that they ran on BBC Micro systems and they came on those big 5 1/4 inch floppy disks.
