Colin.B
My wife and I are thinking of upgrading from our 42 inch LED that's a couple of years old to a 50-55 inch plasma but I keep hearing how 4K resolution T.Vs will be mass produced by the end of next year and cost about as much as the current smart t.vs. Mind you this is just from a couple of people who like to repeat themselves....Any search online just pulls up Sony's 80 inch 4K T.V At any rate, we don't have the money to upgrade twice in a one year time frame and honestly, I imagine the difference between 4k and 1080p would be worth the wait. Phouchg
4K currently is just a gimmick and will be for at least, say, three years. You'd be upscaling 1080p content anyway and at TV viewing distance the difference will be in your head. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57366319-221/why-4k-tvs-are-stupid/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1111017-how-soon-can-we-expect-to-see-4k-tvs-at-affordable-prices/#findComment-595236307 Share on other sites

+Cryton Subscriber² Posted October 9, 2012 Subscriber² Share Posted October 9, 2012 It's inevitable, but who knows when? Hopefully not too soon, I'm not buying the Alien Quadrilogy a forth time. patseguin Global Moderator Posted May 28, 2013 Global Moderator Share Posted May 28, 2013 I don't think any TV stations broadcast in 4K and I know there are no 4K format movies discs, so i'd hold off until it's adopted. I would be like buying an HD TV 3 years before BluRay and HD broadcasts started. Gabe3
i'm still waiting for channels to go from 720p to 1080p. I figured this would happen several years before 4k is popular. maybe they will go from 720 straight to 4k. The Laughing Man
Yea we don't even have 1080p being broadcasting here yet. LaP
4K currently is just a gimmick and will be for at least, say, three years. You'd be upscaling 1080p content anyway and at TV viewing distance the difference will be in your head. http://reviews.cnet....tvs-are-stupid/ 3 years ? Unless you plan to play PC games on this TV it will be a gimmick for at least between 6 to 8 years. 8 years more likely than 6 years. Next gen consoles wont be able to output games at 4K. I think the One will output the UI at 4k but who cares it's just an UI. The games themselves will be run at 1080p and upscaled and wont look better at all (like 360 games don't look better while running at 1080p instead of 720p). The gen after the One and PS4 is at least 7 years away minimum maybe more. Cable TV is not even close to offer 4k. Here it doesn't even offer 1080p. It's either 720p or 1080i. I say we are a good 10 years away from 4k cable TV. Normal people are just starting to get a Blu-ray reader. I don't see them switching from Blu-Ray to 4k tech when it comes to reader before a good 7-8 years easily. At the best the first popular affordable 4k readers might very well be the gen after the One and PS4 (like the PS3 was the first Blu-Ray reader for many people). Unless he plans to keep the TV for 10+ years 4k is worthless unless he connect his PC to it imo. i'm still waiting for channels to go from 720p to 1080p. I figured this would happen several years before 4k is popular. maybe they will go from 720 straight to 4k. Highly unlikely. Cable TV aim at the Lowest common denominator. They will offer 1080p before 4k. I'm not even sure I'll see 4k cable TV before dying to be honest. LUTZIFER
I am sure I read that Netflix is pretty much ready to start streaming in 4K. They already got deals set up with major carriers, like Telus, etc. etc. for dedicated bandwidth streams. I don't think it's just a matter of 4K being expensive, it's the fact that those 4K TVs you see advertised are huge. I haven't really been checking them out much, so maybe there are some smaller ones available, like 42, 47, 55 inch, etc. etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1111017-how-soon-can-we-expect-to-see-4k-tvs-at-affordable-prices/#findComment-595720086 Share on other sites

Yeah your ISP has to support it, it requires hardware installed at the ISP's NOC/Datacenter https://signup.netflix.com/superhd Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1111017-how-soon-can-we-expect-to-see-4k-tvs-at-affordable-prices/#findComment-595720090 Share on other sites

Mr. Gibs
I am sure I read that Netflix is pretty much ready to start streaming in 4K. What's the point? Netflix source material is at most 1080p, and some shows aren't even in HD (older ones obviously). It isn't going to look any better... Colin.B
So I did a lot more research between the time I made this post and now and yeah...Content isn't quite there yet and even if Netflix does stream in 4K how available will that be to the majority of Netflix subscribers with their broadband limitations? Netflix can't even get a decent full on 1080p with DD. Plus, I won't be sitting anywhere close enough to notice the benefits of 4k. So I went and bought a 60 inch Panasonic ST60 and damn do I love this thing.
