A question about the Apple TV

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about getting an Apple TV, the only question I have is, is there any way (apart from jailbreaking which isn't available on the newer model) to access my media on my computer?

I'm mainly wanting the Apple TV to stream from Netflix and to access my old rips I've got on my computer that aren't available on Netflix.

Or would a Roku box be a better bet?

Apple TV plays all of the media on your computer if you install iTunes, add the media to it, and then turn on Home Sharing. Use the same Apple ID for Home Sharing on both your computer and your Apple TV and all of the content will be available.

Do you have an PS3 or Xbox360?

If you do, you can easily use ps3 media server (http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/)

I do have an Xbox and have used PS3 Media Server before but the interface is far to slow, the quality isn't very good and to be honest the Netflix interface sucks on it.

I can't add avi files to iTunes though can I? I'd have to convert all the files to something else (mp4?) wouldn't I?

Just had a thought about this.

I have an iPhone, I would be able to download the plex server for my pc, configure it. Then install the plex app on my iPhone and airplay it to the Apple TV wouldn't I?

Get that on your iPhone. Download the server on your pc. Point it to the folder you have your videos in, and then on your iPhone, you can stream it from your pc to the iPhone then to the AppleTV. It sounds difficult, but its super easy. And it converts on the fly. I use it in exactly the same way you are asking for. Doesn't even drain the iPhones battery much. WELL WORTH IT.
