mrchetsteadman
Is there any program that can do this quickly? I can't seem to find anything on the internet. I like MKVs but I hate the default WMP icon when browsing my library. Thanks for any help! Mathachew Veteran Posted November 25, 2012 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2012 If you install the DivX MKV codec pack, it should show the video preview instead of the default app icon. It worked on Windows 7, and when I upgraded to 8 it stopped. I reinstalled the pack and got my previews back. mrchetsteadman 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1122000-mkv-to-mp4/#findComment-595347666 Share on other sites

br0adband
It's just a remux operation (demux the streams from inside the MKV container and put them into an MP4 container), this doesn't require actually re-encoding/transcoding which is what would require an amount of time given some variables and settings. Avidemux can do it easily (just copy from one container to the other), but the MKVtoMP4 thing seems to be useful as well, albeit incredibly huge (the amount of software included) just to do a simple remux operation. This isn't post related, but how come you have a picture of my cousin as your avatar? Are you from Vancouver, BC? I doubt you are Jaime Koeppe. An avatar is supposed to be a picture that represents your self too. Its funny to convert videos just because you dont like WMP icons :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1122000-mkv-to-mp4/#findComment-595347796 Share on other sites
LUTZIFER
Shark007 Codecs gives mkv files thumnails. That was actually the reason I installed it. I also didn't like not having a thumbnail image, just looked awful not having one. GigaWill
Handbrake can do the conversion. And the conversion speed, quick or slow, depends on the file size and other output settings. remixedcat 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1122000-mkv-to-mp4/#findComment-595349598 Share on other sites

Ambroos
Handbrake is great if you want to do transcoding, but all he wants to do is change the container. When you can do that with the tool posted on the last page without any quality loss or CPU power then why would you even bother transcoding it with Handbrake? If you want to rip a high-quality source or transcode to smaller sizes etc then Handbrake is indeed the only tool you should even consider using. BigDavy
I'm using XenonMKV (http://xenonmkv.ev98.net/) to convert a batch of MKVs to my new Nexus 7 - have been using it for ages, back when I had a BlackBerry Playbook. It keeps the video track intact, and re-encodes the audio to AAC.
