modem
Hello all, I have a client of mine that is a small business (~20 employees) with about 10 computers in their office. Currently they have a problem of most workers doing facebook, ebaying, etc during the normal working hours. The owner consulted with me on what could be done to block virtually all internet access (except email, as well as 5 websites they need to goto for their jobs). Rather than block certain sites like Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, on a black list, the owner would like all internet access except what is needed, shut down. However he would like to allow the workers to have access to these things during their lunch break. I advised him on either getting a router like a DD-WRT based one or a possible firewall, to be able to do what he wants done. While researching, I discovered DD-WRT doesn't do whitelisting, only blacklisting. However DD-WRT has the rules to allow / not allow access at certain times. He would like to keep the cost low (below several hundred dollars that is) for having this taken care of. Does anyone here know if there are routers that will give an option to block all websites by default and allow a whitelist to be made for exceptions? That also includes the ability to open up all internet from say 12:00pm - 1:00pm for lunch break?? Or is an additional hardware firewall needed to perform this task? Thanks! vcfan
I have a Dlink MediaRouter 2000 (DIR-827). Out of the box it was buggy as hell. The fireware was 1.01. There is a firmware update to 1.04 that I did,and it is the most robust router I've ever used. Top notch speeds and no disconnects, laggyness, extra latency. It also does what you need it to do I bought mine for about $150 heres a cnet review http://reviews.cnet....7-34468657.html Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1135520-router-for-business-with-http-whitelisting-features/#findComment-595510590 Share on other sites
modem
Thanks for the link. Does the DIR-827 have the ability to have a ruleset to disable the website filtering rules so that at certain hours it can waive those rules for personnel lunch hours? Use this feature as Access Controls to only grant access to approved sites, limit web access based on time or dates, and/or block internet access for applications like P2P utilities or games. I checked the access control, and I can set rules from one timeframe to another. for example, I set a policy from 8am to noon to only allow 5 sites. then I create a second policy to only allow 5 sites from 1pm till 6pm. This way from noon till 1pm there is no restriction. Or I can just set a policy from noon till 1pm not to block anything. you can set these policies for single machines, group of machines,or all machines. you can set filters on web addresses and ports as well,so you can limit ports to just web and email, and only allow 5 sites. Then at lunch make it a free for all.
