Played the start of this until I got into the town or whatever. Dunno, graphics where pretty bland, the effects where good. But the main problem. It did nothing to. Draw me into the game. The style was bland, the story was... Well nothing, the storytelling to draw me in... Equally nothing.

The only reason one would have to play this is if you. Actually enjoy eternal grinding with no purpose other than the next level and more gear...

New to ARPGs then

No, I played diablo 1,2 and 3 and torchlight.

I generally don't repeat play them after passing the story once though. It's fairly pointless. This game didn't even give me any incentive to finish it once. It was basically just the grind without the story.

At least the diablo games have a good enough and well told enough story that I'm willing to play through it another few times on higher difficulty over time.

This just isn't a very good game, it simply does nothing to pull you in and want to play it.

Also stop calling them ARPGs, it's an annoying and misleading title. They're hack'n slash games. There's 0(zero) RPG about them.

The games are centered around classes, which are roles. A high level of teamwork and communication in PoE leads to a strong cast of auras and strategy. "Action" and "hack'n slash" is essentially the same thing, a battle of semantics. PoE is very much an ARPG.

While D1 and D2 had great stories, lore, and atmosphere, the scariest part of D3 is it's horrific story.

PoE is an excellent game. It is authentic and hardcore. If you don't like it, don't play it, and don't waste your time trolling it.

classes alone doesn't make for an RPG. then TF would be an ARPG as well.

D3 may nto have quite D2 quality story, but it's a lot better than PoE's non existing one.

PoE could be a great game, if it actually had an incentive to play it. if they tried to add a story to it instead of just adding new repeating "levels".

best would of course be a game that combined a bit of both, D3 quality story, with new content added regularly. (yes I know there's a expansion coming, but it's a bit far between)

I agree that PoE indeed has no worthwhile story attached to it, but how long do you spend listening to lore versus actually playing the game? Not for very long. When you repeat the acts in D3, do you listen to the same story over and over again? I did not. I watched it a few times and that is it. By then you know the story. Half of D3 players sit in the AH all day. Others play. Lore is a very small part of the game, as appealing as it can be if done correctly.

Nobody is forcing you to play, though. I still have fun creating and leveling characters in PoE. Not because I am not bored of it yet, but because you feel worth when you level. D3 is very boring. People buy AH gold, spend it and that is exactly how the AH ruined the game. I even say this as one of the people that did it. Loot 2.0 will surely help. I may check the game out again whenever that patch drops.

A quick story for those who do play:

My friend lost his lvl 88 hardcore onslaught RoA ranger last night. He had a 5L Lioneye's and a 6L Destiny Leather on her, as well as many other GG items.

The Destiny Leather was one of the best OS 6L's I'd seen: 1715 total eva, 108 life, 23 fr, 24 cr, 22 chaos res. He spent several hundred chrom's on the socket colors...

He was killed on a Vaal map, took a laser to the face. I wasn't playing with him at the time but we were on the same TeamSpeak line with a few others...

He suddenly made an odd sound like someone had knocked the wind out of him or stabbed him with a knife in the gut... (Kinda like an "uhhh" but with a hiccup and shortness of breath.) Then there was muffled sounds and static as he threw his headset into the wall...

Hahaha, all hail PoE!

That sucks.

Also. I have no idea what you're talking about.

Remove the 2nd half of line 2 and all of line 3 and it's pretty general.

Basically, he lost a character in which he had invested many 100's of hours. The resulting sound created from his shock was very unique and entertaining. It was the perfect, wordless sound. I was playing a different game and I instantly knew what had happened.

And that is why I will never bother with hardcore in any game ever. So much wasted effort.

In PoE, a hardcore death moves the character into the standard realm. I retire my standard characters... I figure once I lose each class at 70+, I'll consider swapping over to sc.

Some pretty cool stuff was posted about patch 1.0.

PathOfExileScionPoster.jpg

New class: The Scion - The Scion starts smack in the center of the skill tree and gains advantages from dexterity, strength, and intellect in a crazy hybrid magic sword throwing super combo class.

Trigger Gems: Trigger Gems are new support link gems similar to past support gems, but allowing you to attach multiple on-hit (offensive) or on-damage (defensive) abilities tied to a single weapon or armor piece. What does that mean in English? It means if you?re a gambling man, you can throw a gem into place with a percentage chance that not only multiple strings of lightning will come out, but maybe an explosion of flame will compliment it.

PvP: New types of PvP offerings are on the way starting with a tried and true classic. Those familiar with the bandit raid event in the Second Act will have a general idea of how the new Capture The Flag PvP mode is going to play out. Players will have to force their way into the enemy?s base as teams of five or six (final testing pending). Speed will come into play in tactics though, especially with the addition of new PvP Tournaments. Hour long PvP tournaments will be on in which players will have to rack up wins through a set system or mode. The more wins you get in the hour, the better your chance of coming out on top with prizes. Therefore just winning isn?t enough as winning decisively will ensure overall victory in these time trials. Finally we?ll have match-making on tap to get you paired up against players of your skill/power level to see how you truly stack up in the game. Rewards will be available only through these PvP modes so those looking for rare loot will need to sign up and prove their worth against actual thinking foes.

Guilds: Shared stashes are arriving at last for guilds, including permission settings to make sure that the leader?s most trusted officers can hand out the goods when he or she is out of action.

I've been doing the 1 week turbo race this week and I'm pretty proud of myself that I've made it to lvl 46. I'm playing a duel wield duelist and it's pretty fun I guess. I started the race with no illusions that I would place anywhere near the top but I'm doing a lot better than I thought I would. I'm currently placed in the mid 300s which is about 10000 places higher than I thought I would be.

I guess I'll retract my earlier comment about hardcore. The element of danger it gives makes playing a little more intense than in normal. Though I can't say I will continue to play hardcore after the race is over. Also after playing in turbo and going to a regular game type all the enemies feel like they're moving in slow motion.

All of the 1.0 stuff sounds nice, too.

TY.

The game starts slowly. Once you get the feel of the tree, a few skill gems to play with, attack speed, and movement speed, things pick up nicely.

That's actually pretty awesome! I was trying to decide what class I wanted to play. Thinking Duelist or Templar, as I'm not sure I feel like kiting things again this time.

If your not into kiting at all, then yeah, Marauder, Duelist, or Templar is definitely the way to go. If it's your first character, I'd suggest a shield over a 2 hander or dual wielding as well.

So, is this only PvE or can you stay clear of that to just enjoy a co-op or single player run?

Your free to solo, team up with 1-5 friends, party with 1-5 strangers, as well as single, team, and ctf pvp.

Some guys ironman solo. Meaning hardcore, no trading, no partying. Play however you like.

There are even leagues like cutthroat... You can be rolling around with a full party of 6, grinding and progressing away, when another party of 6 suddenly enters your live zone...

Their party is immediately pitted against yours. If kills are made, full gears will be dropped... It is quite an exciting and intense experience.

4-5 hours in, enjoying it so far.  Free to play is nice, all the addon stuff is vanity.. not sure how a business can run that way but either way, they did a really good job on the game.

Nice pace, nice build / spec designs, interesting levels that really pickup once you're out of the zombie starting area.

Way too much to learn though and experiment with, but that's also what sets this apart form D3 where blizz went simple.

So I finished the game a few days ago, beaten Dominus a few times too. My verdict is that the game is polished in any aspect. It has improved quite a lot since the beta. The only drawback I found was it's length. I took my time and still finished it in about 20 hours. New difficulty could offer more intense experience but not a new one for sure.
