Install Windows7 and Windows8 with same USB

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I need to have the possibility to install Windows7 or Windows8 with same USB.

Any ideas?

I can install only once, windows7 or windows8 but i don't have any idea how to make it possible to select witch one I want to install.

I already tried to use YUMI to boot the .iso files, but that didn't work :(

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I imagine you'd need some sort of custom loader... It's been done in the past with software like the "6 in 1 windows XP super CD"... I have no idea hot it's done, but it can be done if you find someone who knows how to program.

Yeah a custom loader is the smoothest way of doing it, the only other thing i could think is to partition the USB and have the 7 installer on 1 partition and 8 on the other...then at boot the "2" USB drives would show as boot options and you choose the one you want...

The only immediate problem would be know which is which...but the 1st partition should be 1st in the list.

Hi,

I can YUMI to make the bootloader.

The problem is:

- I can use YUMI to boot the .iso of windows7 and windows8. YUMI will creat the proper menu to select the ISO, but there are some issues while installing windows from ISO file.

- I can, also with YUMI, to extract the files from windows7 OR windows8 to root and install correctly. But in this case I can only have w7 or w8..

Thanks!

Looks like people do not have a good experience from trying this, but a few options to try here

YES YOU CAN with Yumi and add the linux distros with windows 7 and 8 at the same time. While I was trying to do it with Yumi, it was only booting from windows 8 even though I choose windows 7.

So I thought that it must be just a menu mistake that the install files were looking for. So I looked and played a bit and here is the solution that works. It is very simple and easy to do.

Follow these steps and you are good to go;

1. Use YUMI to add whatever linux distro or antivirus or hirens or whatever you want.

2. Now it has come to add the windows 7 or 8 whatever you prefer. In this example let's say we first added the windows 8.1.

3. Just after adding the windows 8.1 choose YES when it asks you to add another distro. And STOP there. You don't have to quit YUMI. Just keep it the way it is.

4. Now open the WINDOWS EXPLORER and go to your USB drive. Under the folder multiboot/menu right click the menu.lst file and choose EDIT with a nice text editor; I choose notepad++

go to the end of the folder as the latest one we added is WINDOWS 8.1 find yours and in the line;

CHAINLOADER /BOOTMGR   change it to CHAINLOADER /WIN8/BOOTMGR

and save the file.

5. Now go to windows EXPLORER and create a folder named exactly as we have written one step before; WIN8 under your USB

and move all the below mentioned folders and files into WIN8 folder;

- BOOT  folder

- EFI  folder

- SOURCES folder

- SUPPORT folder

- autorun file

- bootmgr  file

- bootmgr.efi   file

- setup   file

6.   Now go and add windows 7 from YUMI as usual

Thats it. Now bot with YUMI. When you choose you will get Windows 7. DON'T WORRY WHEN AT FIRST WINDOWS LOGO LOOKS LIKE WINDOWS 8. WAIT A BIT AND YOU WILL SEE THAT YOU ARE IN WINDOWS 7 INSTALLATION.

p.s.   This works only with windows 7 and 8 added with linux distros. If you add windows xp this does not work.

I hope that this works.

Could not edit so I have to make a correction. I forgot to add the SCRIPTS folder as well into each windows directory of its own. the best way to find out which files or folders belong to windows 8 or 7 is first add all other distros and check the USB and add every other folder or files created once adding the windows iso.

Good Day,

I have tried what yumiguy has suggested but it did not work, basically if I boot the win 7 it boots win 7, if i boot the win 8 it still boots win 7, i believe that there might be another file that needs to be edited to point to the boot/bcd of windows 8 instead of the win 7 boot/bcd.

Thats what I believe to be the issue but I cannot find that file, looked through the whole flashdrive.

I also did not see a "Scripts" folder anywhere on the flashdrive before or after I added windows 7.

If I could get some assistance on this matter it would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
