Classic RPG adventure created in Excel spreadsheets

Recommended Posts

The game is called Arena.Xlsm and its creator is Cary Walkin, a chartered accountant from Toronto. The game creation took him about four months, and he built it on his spare time, while he was studying for his MBA. Now, he has uploaded the full version on his blog, where you will also find a wiki and bug feedback.

The game is an old school fantasy rpg, where you kill monsters, gather loot, gain experience and built up fame. Its key features include over 2000 different enemies, 1000 possible items, 31 spells, 36 achievements, 15 artifacts, 4 different endings and 8 big bosses. What else can one ask from an RPG adventure, especially if it?s programmed entirely with Excel macros.

Arena.Xlsm works on Microsoft Excel 2007 and 2010, but it was not tested on Excel 2013 and it won?t run at all on the Mac versions. Also, it will not work on Excel starter packs, since they don?t support macros (I tried it). To play it you have to enable macros and to save your progress you have to make a copy of the Arena.Xlsm workbook under a different name, (e.g. ArenaLvl46.Xlsm).

Didn't try it myself yet - don't have VBA installed for certain safety reasons. But looks seriously awesome, if only because of the crazy idea :D
