Memorable things about Windows XP RIP

Recommended Posts

My memories:

New approach to piracy aka Product Activation vs FCKGW key

Various versions

Good solution for overloaded tray

Ability to use various themes and login screens

Useful common task/places etc. in folders

Font smoothing <3

Also, andreaborman bring me back recently lots of other memories.

That's the Longhorn-style system tray clock.

Edit: Ah, you were questioning why the clock showed PM. :p

I also loved customising Windows XP and using visual styles. Luna Element was also my favourite visual style. Since Windows Vista I haven't had the desire to customise because I've liked the default visual styles etc. I still use Windows XP on a legacy desktop and laptop, although I seldom use those machines.

 yea PM

But I used to love theming XP too, I can't remember the name of the style but it was a really thin black bordered style with a half thickness taskbar also black with a curved type gradient and a small round start button, almost like a tiny Vista taskbar

Still use XP at my business. Got 8 computers on the network. Light weight, extremely fast, works on the older setups - networking is easy on. Could install 7 but don't see the point. Dont use any programs that use it. If anything, most of the software used to run laser and cnc machinery is more compatible with xp than win 7. Best OS ever - for the time. Much bigger leap back then than vista/7. Lets not talk about 8.

My favorite thing about Windows XP is you didn't have fan boys for almost 10 years saying if you didn't upgrade your in the stone age..

Sure you did (well not for 10 years but..), had plenty of "XP sucks, you can pry 95 out of my cold dead hands" types back then too. Same arguments, different versions.

I made a custom brush for Gimp to have a bit of Windows XP spirit around if I should ever need...

Hah, this I don't miss. The file manager would do that to me all the time, could get it to crash just by looking at it funny. Was a nice update (after SP2 anyway) from 2KPro, but nowadays it's just too clunky, never mind the obvious support/security ramifications, etc.

Same here; although I did tweak it a tad to get the pastel blue bits desaturated in 7, but otherwise yea pretty happy with the stock theme... although just for giggles I did throw a Luna clone on a 7 desktop for a while. There's a couple other XP ported themes that I used to like back then, but still preferring Aero.

Not even close on the same scale with 7 and 8.. You had it more with 2K and XP users up until SP1 came out.

I like that Luna wasn't so square. I like the rounded, smooth feel (Luna, Aero).

I remember how cool having a windows XP machine was, and being super jealous my friend had it

I still use XP daily at work (infact using it to type this).

I used to Skin XP all the time, however with Vista/7 I haven't had to as it looked great as is.

Everything felt modern, felt new, felt re-designed.

Most of all.. we had windows ME before XP and had to take it in nearly every week to get it wiped and redone. It got to the point the PC Place gave us a free OEM copy of XP and installed it and we never had to take it back.

With Windows XP I started using winnt.sif and loved it

Custom installations possible, Documents and Setting stored on another partition, most OS settings preconfigured...

Autounattend.xml is awesome and an improvement over winnt.sif IMO.
