marktcd
Hello, I had an accident with my iMac ? it fell on the corner and the outer glass screen (not the inner LED (?)) screen) is smashed, and there is a dent in the corner (in the housing). Code: W8030J5HDAS emc2389 The replacement screen appears pretty inexpensive (about 120 euros), but the housing is expensive (about 280 euros) 1. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the outer screen without repairing/replacing the housing (see attacehd photos)? There do not appear to be any rivets/connections at the corner where the outer screen would be affixed, but the repair place I asked gave me the (self-serving) answer that the housing would have to be replaced as well; and it is not dented in such a way that the housing now protrudes, or would interfere with the outer glass screen. 2. The machine is a late 2009/early 2010 model, the most basic model. If it costs 400 euros to replace the screen and housing, would anyone have an opinion on whether it is best simply to buy a new machine (just over a thousand euros??) or invest in the repair? How many problem-free years should one hope to get out of an iMac? 3. I haven?t turned the machine on since it fell? That would be another consideration!! Should I do this or leave it to a professional?! 4. I have a complete back-up of the computer on Time machine, so I assume I could just transfer everything to the new machine. (What if anything would I lose, if I just transfer the material to the new machine?) I?d really appreciate any advice on this? Thanks in advance for any response! Brian M. Veteran Posted June 24, 2013 Veteran Share Posted June 24, 2013 You'll need 3 parts: 1) Outer glass 2) LCD 3) Rear housing Apple will charge about ?350 for the LCD, ?100 for the glass and about ?150 for the rear housing. The LCD and glass are easy replacements - the rear housing is an absolute pig. It takes experienced technicians over an hour - you basically have to remove everything from the old case and build your imac in the new one - every cable, sensor - everything. If you can bend the housing back so the LCD fits in properly - sure you can do that - it's only metal. But it wont be very pretty. Can you be certain that the LCD needs to be replaced? is it something you see in the photo? There is no apparent damage to it. You say ?150 for the housing - I got quoted a lot more!! The lack of prettiness I would happily live with - a lot more pretty than it is now ;-) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1160664-imac-fall-screenhousing-replacement-question/#findComment-595778912 Share on other sites
Biohead
You say you haven't turned the iMac on yet - You'll instantly see if you need a new LCD when you do. One thing you may be able to do is to sell your iMac as-is on eBay (people will actually buy such things), then buy a new low-end iMac. I'd hazard a guess that you wouldn't be paying much more this way than getting yours repaired - and you also get a much faster model that way. 123456789A
What kind of a drop did it take to do that? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1160664-imac-fall-screenhousing-replacement-question/#findComment-595778922 Share on other sites
Lilrich
As said already power the iMac on and see if the LCD is actually damaged to me it looks like the Glass which goes over the front of the LCD has merely shattered and the housing has bent. marktcd
To satisfy anyone's interest - I hand it as hand luggage in one of those custom made bags for iMacs. It has some - but evidently not enoguh padding! I was emigrating and on going into the airport, I was turning round to wave goodbye. It slid off the top of the other bags on the trolley. Careless, but was a bit choked up at leaving! Not a good start to the trip!! I learned elsewhere that the outer glass panel is held by magnets - so I have managed to take the old outer screen off. Picture attached - just a dent in the aluminium with no visible damage on the interior. (The inerior at the corner is bascially hollow). Re powering it up... Perhaps a silly question, but I'm assuming a technician will do nothing other than power it up to see if there is any further damage. I was told elsewhere that I might do more damage to it by powering it on... I'm way out of my depth here - any advice appreciated... Lilrich
I don't think powering it up is going to do any more damage than is already done, if you power it on you are going to see if; 1) It boots 2) If the LCD is shot If it dosen't boot you may have a bigger problem on your hands than just dealing with the LCD. When you power it on, if your LCD looks like this or has any leaking black at all then you are gonna have to replace the entire LCD unit. UPDATE: Here is a good link that will show you how to do all the repairs except bend the chassis to that iMac :) http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1160664-imac-fall-screenhousing-replacement-question/#findComment-595780868 Share on other sites
articuno1au
This one seems to be pretty simple to begin with: Turn it on and see if it works. That one test could render the rest of the conversation pretty moot >.> Honestly, I would prefer to buy a new one. Simply put it's a delicate machine that you've dropped. The cost of repair is about half the cost of buying a new one, which is also faster and less likely to die of old battle wounds. Seems like a no brainer, but I guess it depends on your finances >.< 1 vote for a new one from me :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1160664-imac-fall-screenhousing-replacement-question/#findComment-595780890 Share on other sites
marktcd
I bit the bullet and turned it on - all fine. Technicain did a check on it - all fine.. Amazing after dropping 5 feet. There will be a dent in the corner of hte housing, but the screen should go on fine. In Thailand, where it will cost me 180 euros, all in... A very large thank you to anyone who offered advice. The internet may make it possible to put up these queries, but it's the kindness of strangers that makes gets them resolved...
