convert mkv to avi or mp4 without losing quality

i am using uRex recommended in the software topic but it uses divx codecs to encode more mkv files which ends up degrading the video quality. also it takes 15 minutes for a job to run which isn't ideal.

 

is there a quicker way to not lose quality and go from mkv to avi or mp4? anything wmp will read really... I am trying to serve the files over dlna

Try Avidemux it's really easy to use. Open Avidemux. Open the video file. For the audio output and video output chose copy. Select mp4 as the output format. Then save.

I use MKVtoMP4 or MediaCoder. They keep the H.264 codec but convert the container and audio to MP4 and compatible audio. Doing this allows me to play original MKV files on my iPad.

If I have a H.264 MKV file that I want to convert to MP4 (for compatibility on the iPad), I use MKVtoMP4. It keeps the H.264 codec and puts it into the MP4 container. This keeps the quality of the original file (usually 720p) but makes it compatible on more devices. The bonus to this, is that it only takes a few minutes for a 1GB file, rather than an hour, as it isn't remuxing the entire file. However this programme cannot sucessfully convert any other format to MP4, only MKV.

 

If I want to convert an MKV to AVI, I will use Freemake.

Great program, highly recommended. It wont convert to avi, but encoding from avi to mp4/mkv personally I think it cant be beat. And ive tried alot of encoders. 
Not sure if it does it anymore, but Virtualdub is great for encoding avi too. Used it back in the day when I used to put Buffy episodes up on Usenet :)

If you're encoding Handbrake is the best thing hands down, but if you just need to change the container (like the OP asked) it is a gigantic waste of time, resources and quality.
