Windows 8.1 installation: 32 or 64 bit

Recommended Posts

Since some issues have occured with Windows 8.1 (upgrade) I was wondering which version to install on Virtualbox?

32 bit or 64 bit?

I also have an error (see below) that my CPU doesn't support it. Strange, because In installed Windows 8 (all without updates I must say) onto this 64 bit VM

Can I better switch to 32 bit for testing - since the tips n' tricks also didn't work out on Robbie Ride's:

1. Place and rename the MSU file in an easily accessible place, e.g. C:\8preview\preview.msu
2. open command prompt in administrator mode.
3. Type: Expand ?F:* c:\8preview\preview.msu C:\8preview\
4. Type: DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\8preview\Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64.cab

those on x86 platforms it should read DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\8preview\Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x86.cab

So bacially, can I better install a 32 bit of Windows 8.1 - via Windows 8 installation - or can I just try some other week until Microsoft has sorted out these issues [iF they are Microsoft related btw) to install the 64 bit one?

A user-applicable workaround is posted in the VirtualBox Community Forums applicable to both the X64 version of Windows 8.x and Windows Server 2012R2.  (It does NOT apply to either Windows 8.0 or Server 2012.)

Did you try enabling these features in VirtualBox?

The Chipset should be at PIIX3
Extended Features should be selected
Extended Features Enable PAE/NX should be selected

Thanks,

If I remember correctly, the required features were available in CPU's from about 2005, MS is just making use of these new features to make win8.1 runs better. :)

mhweb - any of those chipsets will work (I chose ICH6, which replaces ICH9 as the top-end chipset).

Extended features are enabled by default on any CPU that supports them (generically, any Wolfdale, Kentsfield, or later Intel CPU family) - including PAE/NX and VT-x.

The issue is with a new cutoff in the 8.1 x64 Preview - it's supported in real hardware, but requires a workaround in VirtualBox (for the present).

Here's how to apply the workaround in the current version of VB - https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=56196#p260112
