Do I need Creative's Alchemy?

Recommended Posts

Even though I don't really have any of the games listed for use with Alchemy, I noticed some listed are not too old and wondering if some future games will still use directsound3d? Creative's site says to not install Alchemy unless you have games that use directsound3d.

Other games seem to use OpenAL...whatever that is, so should I also install Open Al?

While I'm at it, I have a question about virtual surround. I have stereo HP's and Creative has something called CMSS. I can't seem to find it for download and do I need to do anything special to set it up or is it ready to go after install?

Oh and yes I have a creative Xfi card.

Another question. I just came across this: http://software.store.creative.com/software/sound-blaster-x-fi-mb3/106-21569.aspx

Should I get this or is this for use with anything but x Fi cards?  I just want to make sure I get the best virtual 3d gaming experience.

If you have any game that relies on EAX (and doesn't support the successor OpenAL standard - basically, any game aimed at Vista or XP originally), then ALchemy still has a use.  (ALchemy is also used by the Sound Blaster Audigy line of cards - but for the same reasons.)  Fortunately, such games are very few - none have been developed since the launch of Windows 7.
