$795 ViewSonic PRO8200 Home Theater .... work in progress..

 

While watching in person there is no grain, flicker or audio sync problems. All were from the recording.

looks great.  Consider Elite Screens as your choice if you decide to go that route.  I was able to pick up a 100" electric screen for under $200 (priced matched Amazon with Electronic Expo).  I picked up the Optoma HD33 and couldnt be happier with the PQ .  I dont have a dedicated room so I dont get to use it as often as I like.. mostly either big events (Superbowl) or movie nights.  I solved the "distance" problem by picking up a 25' hdmi cable that runs from my receivers 2nd output.

I was having focus issues. It always seemed blurry. Upon reading you had to let it warm up for 15 mins, other wise the focus would jump in and out. Even after 15 mins and when it was focused the corners wouldn't be they would be out of focus.

 

The pictures just never popped like I thought they should.

Not really, at least not that i've noticed. But I do have to get it more calibrated, the darks are a little to dark.

Better surround sound system for my living room - Not yet

 

I moved the speaker system that was in my living room into the theater room. it's a Logitech z680 speaker system.

 

 

Still sounds great to this day. How I got them is nothing short of amazing. about 5 years ago I did work for a customer who had them, but who had recently switched to wearing headphones while playing World of war craft. So basically he gave them to me on a trade. He gave me the speakers in exchange for 1 hour of work (worth $42.80)

Well I just worked out the contrast and brightness, I think I got it looking much better.

The only issue with having your own theater is, it doesn't make sense to go to a movie anymore. Thus you have to wait until the movies come out on blu-ray. Which is why I have compiled a list of 42 Movies currently in the theater so I don't forget about them :)

looks great.. if you are on a budget consider some of the paint your own screens.  you can then apply a border to the wall to have it appear as a fixed frame.  def consider covering or removing those mirror doors on the closet (if this is going to become a theater room only).  really makes me wish I had an open room to covert to a theater.. my optoma prob doesnt have 20 hours logged after 1 year :cry:

This long and you haven't mounted it to the ceiling yet...

Man that was the first thing I did when I made the home theater room before Xmas. Need to replace the mount though, the one I have is like 20-30cm drop. I need as little as possible to avoid using the digital keystone.

Right now I also have a crappy pull down Eli screen. Which gets V folds. So I'll be getting a wall mounted framed screen, whenever I have the money and feel like doing the work to make sure it gets correct, with all the centering and stuff, and I pretty much need to sort out a shorter roof mount first to, and possibly build a box around the projector at the same time(with ventilation)

Of course with a framed screen I'll have to go down to 130-135 inches instead of the 150 I have now( though it's set up for about 140 I guess right now, since it goes a bit low covering some it ports at 150). As a bonus the framed screen I've been looking at is a better product and is D65 grey instead of white as the elite screen. My acer projector at 3000 ANSI lumen is strong enough to give good whites on my medium dark blue/grey walls when set for that background color, so the grey screen will give me much better real contrast with riches darks and blacks with good whites. Right now the projector overpowers the screen a bit.

Its not bad, but obviously not as sharp seeing how 1920 by 1280 is bown  up to 140 inches. In this case I have VGA (At the moment) hooked up to it and then S/PDIFIF out of my computer into my speaker system

You are correct though , because it's not mounted yet it does go in on the edges, but the picture in the middle looks just fine. Though i'm sure it will look better once mounted.

Console games work great. Except... Last get console games have very big pixels at ~140 inches :p

As for surrounds sound I used my old proper surround setup with Dali 808 front speakers and 202 rear speakers, center and 12 inch sub in the same series, these are at least 15 years by now and still work great, combined with my new Yamaha vx-r675 (might have gotten the letters in the wrong order...) that I got shortly after the projector and setting up the room.

My old pioneer receiver worked ok enough and was possibly slightly more powerful, but it only had optical. With the yamaha it's a lot easier, it has 4 or so hdmi in and one hdmi out. So I don't have to set up anything and it takes care of all syncing and such for me. Needed to get a better quality hdmi cable though, as cheap ones don't work over 10 meters, found a reasonably priced high quality 15 meter one that's actually certified though. The receiver also has a mic that auto calibrates the speakers for you and it supports spotify connect as well as airplay(not for video audio only it seems).

I can't have roof lamps there, so I got a nice pair of wall lamps, they look really cool too with a flippable half spherical cover so I can send the light up, down or both as I want.

Thanks guys, when I move I think I'll put my 70" in my bedroom or man cave (if I have one) and go the projector route. Does it matter how small the room is?

Yes, my room is about 5 is meters, giving me about 4.5 meters of throw, which is just about enough for 150 inches.

With a wall mounted framed screen I'll have more distance, but I'll have to go smaller since it can't go below the low media unit I self made to keep the receiver, consoles, HTPC center speaker and so on. While the pull down can go down partially in front. And there the tall side speakers which are now partially cover and have to be angled out wards to avoid echoing in the fabric and wall.

So if you have a small room you may need a short throw projector.
