Windows 8.1 9600.16384 RTM INFO.

Recommended Posts

Just FYI I was able to upgrade fully, using the "provided" key, then using my Retail key afterwards to activate. It gave me this options running the setup from Windows 8.0

How did you get the option to keep your programs and settings? Mines is only offering personal files. :(

Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.

I think the problem here is your trying to install Windows 8 Pro, on a Windows 8 Pro with Media Center coded OS.

Try this: Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Change EditionID to "Professional" and ProductID to "Windows 8 Pro"

Then run setup again, see what it offers. You will obviously lose Media Center, but I think you can then use your MCE key after to activate and it will also reinstall MCE.

And P.S. write down the existing settings first just in case.

Yes the media center key will work again to activate and install the MCE.

Didn't work, sadly :(

Weird... you could always do the above steps, us a Windows 8 Pro ISO and re install with the keeping apps/settings/files, that will take away MCE, then do the Windows 8.1 install.

Could the issue be a problem with lanuage packs?

If we run 8.1 Preview, can we install 8.1 over it?  Or am I forced to format/re-install Windows 8, then put on Windows 8.1?

you can install the RTM over the preview but it won't let you keep anything

Thanks for the quick reply, Brando212.  Keep anything as in what, Metro stuff? Or everything that is on my boot drive?

from what i understand (as i haven't tried it myself) is it will create a windows.old folder like older upgrades and erase your metro apps & settings

Have the hashes been confirmed by any official sources, or are people just taking the leakers word that it's an "official" MS image? I know this leaker/releaser is generally correct/trusted and they probably are genuine but usually you can verify the hashes on MSDN. Since they haven't been released on MSDN yet, there seems to be no way to verify these are definitely genuine MS images?

No, we still don't have official confirmation from MS about the hashes since the RTM will be released on MSDN and Technet on October 18.
