Installing Office 2010 Standard on a Remote Desktop Server

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I thought this was going to be a simple process, but I'm stuck and don't know what to do.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 server configured with the Remote Desktop Server (RDS) role.

I am now trying to install Office 2010 Standard (32bit) on the server so my users can get access to Outlook, Excel, etc.

I've purchased:

021-10257 (5.000) Microsoft Office 2013 Sngl OPEN 1 License No Level

Which are in my account on the MS Volume Licensing Service Center

There are no entries in the Download option (is this correct?) but if I click Key I can see my key.

I have downloaded Office 2010 Standard but when I run startup.exe the first thing it asks me for is a key, and the Office Standard 2010 MAK key from above does not work - it comes back saying that it's invalid or not recognised or something.

Can anyone explain to me where I'm going wrong and what I have to do to install Office 2010 Standard? I thought this was going to be easy but it's been a massive headache so far :-(

Thanks for reading.

Thanks sc302. For some reason only a couple of things had been added to me VLSC account. This morning when I checked a whole bunch of other stuff was there, including Office 2010 with SP1 which installed onto the RDS server without a hitch. Phew!

My only concern now is that I did not use the Control Panel > Install Application on Remote Desktop Session Host, I just ran the setup.exe

I can't see any problems with the installation - connected to the server with multiple users, opened Excel and Word as each user and everything worked fine. I guess I'll have to keep a close eye on things to start with.

Generally office will have the server go into install mode if it is a terminal server. I have not seen an issue with office. Other installs sometimes do not put the server into an install mode and you need to do that manually esp if a reboot is needed to finish the install, you need to copy out the command to finish out of the registry, delete the key and put it back into install mode to finish the install.
