There is no doubt a part of me that wishes I knew what all of that meant.

My work will actually cover most of the cost for me to go back to school, however I cannot justify anything that really has to do with game development as something pertinent to my current position.

I'm with you there

So are they saying that 4.5GB is the maximum amount of ram that they have access to or that is just the amount they chose to use?

They're saying they had 4.5GB available. Which tallies up with there being 3.5 reserved for system use.

There's technically 5.5 available, but 1GB of that is reserved by the OS and can be accessed dynamically.

Why is only 5.5GB available? This needs to be addressed in firmware. Besides, what is that 2GB DDR3 for anyway? Is it just sitting there?

As for Second Son, really loved it but finished it, 98% completion and over 50% of trophies as well. The latter is a first for me. Really good experience, best in the series so far even if the story was somewhat shoehorned in many ways (not saying it was bad, just didn't make much sense at times). I thought Augustine was a great character, interesting backstory. And the banter between all characters was very well done - whether written or ad-libbed, not sure, but it was good.

if you're still not decided about this, get it!

EDIT: Augustine...who the hell is Valentine? Must have been watching Ender's Game again

I believe both consoles use their extra RAM for app switching/suspension functionalities.

And as time goes on and the OS refined, I'm sure both consoles footprints will be lowered. Although, I guess that also depends on their plans for future updates & what resources they require.

What was done with the PS4 memory...

Only thing you really need to understand as a game developer who understands all that is two things.

1. 3 BILLION VERTS PER MESH IS ABSOLUTELY HUGE. That means each mesh is roughly 750 million quads.

To put that in perspective, Joel from The Last of Us was 350,000 polys (A polygon is a quad in game dev land). Im thinking they meant the original sculpts were 750 million quads and they were 'baked' into lower poly mesh of about 500,000 or so. That gives the impression of a character having lots of detail, where infact the detail is in the displacement maps.

2. That stuff with the PS4 memory... even I dont quite understand it :p Looks pretty damn impressive though!

I UNDERSTAND NONE OF THIS

Struggled with the I/O of the harddrive? Does that mean the antique 5400RPM SATA 2 hard drives we have in both consoles will become the bottleneck of this generation?

For sure that's going to happen, there's no need for the OS and UI to take up so many resources, at least not all the time. They could offer us a profile choice - want a profile where you can do all that switching? Sure, then it's max 1080/30 performance. Willing to suspend that and go for an all-gaming profile? Then you get the 1440/30 performance with all the effects switched on. Granted, offering these options does negate the very essence of a dedicated device (which is supposed to be easy to use, few options, all ready to go etc.) but it's one way to think of things.

The bottleneck of this generation will be having to support users who get games digitally.

The benefit of still using discs is that it can cache onto the hard drive and simultaneously read from that and the disc. Solely downloading games means that antique hard drive will be a huge bottleneck going forward :/

They should have gone with 7200rpm drives at the very least, though it doesn't make that huge of a difference. I don't think the Blu-ray drives are faster than the 5400rpm drives we have? There's also no way they could have gone for SSD for storage proper, or even just for the OS volume. Both consoles were pushing the price envelope as it was. I still think the bottleneck right now are developers. Same as on PC. The software is nowhere near to maxing what the hardware can do, and that's due to human effort minimization.

Glad to be among that figure, though already traded it in :D

One playthrough was enough for me, over 20 hours, got my money's worth. A sequel is a foregone conclusion here, Delsin is too much of an awesome character to let sit on the sidelines. He'll also probably be in a few fighting games while waiting for Infamous 4.

Still waiting on the price for SS to come down.

You can definitely see the difference

As far as a price drop, I would think you will see something before the fall, depending on how other game releases are doing. Or sales could fall through the floor for the game and you see a drop much sooner.

Infamous 1 looked quite bad compared to Infamous 2, forget Second Son...it's a whole different scale. The only thing that didn't evolve that much are the bystanders, even in Second Son they are somewhat...minimalistic. But otherwise it's worlds apart.

I hate how hard Game stores push for this stuff.

No I dont want an Infamous hat, a Division scarf and backpack and Watch Dogs sunglasses.

Can't you just buy the regular version?

After listening to how awesome the special collectors platinum napalm diamond limited bloodmoon edition is and what it contains for 5 minutes. Every time because he doesn't give you a chance to interrupt and say "no".

Loving the puzzles of the Paper Trail. Some are actually quite hard, kinda reminds me of the ol 'Vanishing Point' game.
Already upto Paper Trail 6 so hit me up if you need help :)
