Here's a Novel Way to Dim the PS4 Controller's Light Bar

If you?re not a fan of your PlayStation 4 controller performing its best impression of the Aurora Borealis each and every time that you sit down to play a game, then we have a novel little solution for you. A thrifty eBay merchant has crafted a custom set of light bar decals, which not only dim the brightness of the controversial illuminating surface, but also look reasonably stylish to boot.

Available for ?3.49 ($5.75), you?ll get three nifty stickers per purchase, with each option boasting a different PlayStation themed cut out. There?s also a blank label if you?re determined to not let any light through, but we actually quite like the subtle neon branding. Of course, you?re probably not going to be able to play augmented reality application The Playroom with these attached, but we assume that they can be removed.

With the platform holder insisting that it has no plans to allow users to dim the DualShock 4?s colourful gadget, this may actually prove the perfect solution to your glare related dilemmas. Are you planning to purchase a set of these to try on your peripheral? Cover us up in the comments section below.

Actually looks pretty nifty!

They actually do look quite good. Sucks you have to buy a sticker to deal with the light, but I guess this is going to make someone money. Why the ###### didn't I think of it?

Although it would suck if they were one-use stickers. If any games came out which used the light bar in a fun way then you'd have to take it off and it mightn't stick back on.

In that case, black electrical tape wold be the go.

?3.50? What a rip off

Do like the PS logo one though, but I'd still rather an off option for the LED :P Or at least let us choose custom colours if it can't be turned off with firmware

I thought people wanted the option to turn it off to make the battery last longer... was there really an issue of the light being too bright? (note - i do not have a ps4 yet)

It is not bright enough to act like a flashlight, it is more the reflection of it in the TV. So I think it could depending on the persons set up, such as how close they are to their TV and what kind of screen they have. Luckily I do not see it at all even in the dark, as my couch sinks me lower than my TV so my controller is not high enough in the air to reflect off the TV. But I could see it perhaps being an issue for some people yep.

Yeah, I think you'd have to be sitting right on top of your TV for it to be an issue. To be honest, I forget there even is a light bar on the back of the controller when I'm playing. People act like it lights up their whole room, but unless theirs is 10 times brighter than mine, I don't see how that's possible unless they game in a closet (maybe?)

This is kind of cool though. I don't have the camera or any plan to get it yet, so I could see myself getting a cut out like these.

While looking for news on the DS4 thumbstick issue I came across this:

Shuhei Yoshida: You Can?t Turn off the Light Bar on the DualShock 4, But Developers Can

The tweets were made back in the summer but I guess there's hope they'll add a feature to switch it off via XMB one day. Developers obviously have access to it via programming so it's not a hardware "limitation" as we previously thought.

I wonder if that changed before launch seeing as the tweet he made in January said there was no plans

Good stuff. I think their worry right now is people turn it off globally and some games that need it have issues. However a simply system check when loading such a game couldn't be hard to do. Such as "You have the light turned off, game X uses it for.....".
