PS4 and Xbox One resolution / frame rate discussion

Recommended Posts

5~7 + 7 is not even nearly 20. Let's just deal with real numbers and results, as this topic is for comparing actual end user results which are measured. Not what ifs as it's clear until DX12 proves itself on the One this will just start another the cloud is going to do debate... For whoever wants to you'd be better creating a dedicated DX12 topic in the One section, or just posting what devs say as individual topics.

We already have one, and I would not object to it being revived.

It's perfectly fine to discuss it here too though.

Well first off it was my error, I read it wrong. I somehow got the number 17% in my head when I posted it. But still, lets step back a bit instead of just crucifying me for it.

Now, let me rephrase my post:

A performance gain of nearly 15% is pretty significant without any hardware changes, imo. It's not 30-40%, but that's still a significant amount.

15% software wise is still a significant gain. But as you said, we won't know until it's actually released. Regardless, DX12 may directly affect resolution and frame rate in the games so I think it's perfectly fine for it to be discussed in here with that context being upheld.

Since it should be said, we don't know what gains other games will see, Project Cars getting an added 7% on top just from DX12 is for that game, who's to say what other games get, specially when you code the game for DX12 from the start and aren't just patching it in after the fact.

I have to agree. And that all falls in line with this topic, where DX12 impacts frame rates, and to a lesser extent res.

Does The Witcher 3's latest patch fix console performance?

Resolutions are unchanged too; PS4 makes the most of a native 1920x1080 frame-buffer, while Xbox One upscales from 1600x900 in most areas.

Performance is another matter though. On Xbox One especially, we see the addition of a proper 30fps cap giving us a far more consistent rate of motion in play.

In terms of direct platform-to-platform comparisons on patch 1.03, PS4 and Xbox One are both capped to 30fps now, but Microsoft's console does hold a steadier line on balance. In almost every segment of gameplay tested, the performance overhead on Xbox One prior to the patch now translates to a confident 30fps cap - and with far fewer stutters below. It's possible further optimisation on the Sony release could bring it up to speed, but for now Xbox One enjoys a noticeable advantage in terms of overall consistency.

It's an advantage also seen in The Witcher 3's in-engine cut-scenes. As before, PS4 automatically locks to the 20fps line at any sign of dropping below 30fps. By comparison Xbox One lurks at the 25fps mid-point, freely updating with frames as and when they become available. The net result is that PS4 typically runs at a slower, more sluggish rate in every scene tested. Where performance goes below 30fps on Xbox One, the read-out is also identical to its results before patch 1.03 - meaning no performance boost is apparently made to these stress-points. The only difference here is that it now hits a 30fps ceiling.

On balance, it's an improvement on both sides but Xbox One owners have a bigger reason to celebrate this update. Though it struggles to match the clarity of PS4's native 1920x1080 output, the 30fps cap is better adjusted for Microsoft's platform in practice, with fewer stutters during play giving it a tangible performance advantage.

Boom. Hard to believe how so much has changed on the Xbox since the debut of the console. It struggled so much early on, but now it is coming of age.

Yeah, 900p is boom indeed.

Performance > Res.

Performance improvements > no performance improvements

Boom x 2

The performance is hardly an issue. Runs almost identical on both just the PS4 looks better.

Pretty sure the PS4 will be capped at 30 in a patch then normality resumes.

What the heck are you talking about? This is ONE game where the XB1 version has a marginal framerate advantage over the PS4 and only because the latter is running at a higher resolution. If they were both running at the same resolution the PS4 version would be faster. The situation hasn't changed since launch.

What the heck are you talking about? The situation has changed A LOT, and there has been more than ONE game. Not to mention, as stated by Eurogamer, the framerate is MORE than marginally better on the Xbox One. It's listed right there in BLACK and WHITE, and there is a video showing it (hint..watch the video). Only one console is floating in the low 20s and actually hits 19fps for awhile. While the other is in the high 20's and 30 for the MAJORITY of the time, NEVER getting as low as the PS4.

Regarding the video, note that the Xbox One is consistently at 30fps. And if you noticed, the PS4 struggles to stay at 30FPS for nearly the whole video. The PS4 floats around 28-29 and the Xbox One is a rock solid 30 dropping rarely 29. Also if you notice when the PS4's extended visit in the low 20's with actual drops into the teens, the Xbox One is still in the high 20s. Granted, the X1 does hit its lowest point for a second, 25.

During some of the video, the X1 is performing 50% better than the PS4 when PS4 struggles to stay in the 20's, while X1 hits 30fps.

The PS4 drops are not good, and can be a game changer for some. The trade off for the 1080p res is not worth it.

A few frames different is very tricky to notice. You know that. Everyone knows that.

I'm confident the PS4 will get a patch to lock the frames.

after the big update last year, ufc, gta,far cry,the crew, cod, dmc, ac unity, dragonage, witcher3 probably more.

you could say the same with resolution, especially with all the post processing and AA that goes on. but on a technical discussion level, a performance advantage is a performance advantage, just as a visual advantage is a visual advantage.

The XB1 is still struggling to hit 1080p, even at 30fps. That's what we've been talking about since release.

Here's some quotes from the article:

In open spaces, rapid gallops through forests produces similar results; regular single-frame drops on PS4 disrupt motion, while Xbox One runs above 30fps to cause its own frame-pacing issues. In battle, both platforms flatten at around 30fps, while a lengthy fight with a griffin shows bigger drops once we cast alpha-based spells such as Igni. The end effect is the same: neither console version feels as smooth as it should, and each is prone to big dips during gameplay.

The PS4 release has the right tactic, but it lets itself down by being unable to stream in world geometry or render effects at a perfect 30fps to take advantage of this. The perceived effect is a judder to motion on both consoles, for cut-scenes and gameplay, though PS4 is capable of smoother passages of play at times.

Performance is also a sticking point; PS4 is preferable in this case for its 30fps cap, though it suffers from some stutter, while Xbox One's uncapped frame-rate gives us far less consistent experience.

But you're right, clearly it's a massive win for the XB1 that it's struggling to run the game at 900p and offers a less consistent experience. What's clear is that both consoles struggle to run the game.

Try to keep on pace with us here my friend. You are welcome to quote old articles while we are discussing new articles post patch. But maybe you were intentionally doing that? If so, NOT good of you.

In a subsequent post, Momot said that the developer is "looking into the frame rate issues on PS4 as well."

As I said .. the PS4 will get sorted as the Xbox one did.

We tested Crookback Bog and can confirm that there are still serious issues here, especially on PlayStation 4 - though Xbox One remains affected to a lesser degree.

Neither PS4 or Xbox One releases are perfect, and pop-in is still a major issue in built-up areas - plus a jitter (also seen on PC) when changing the speed of camera motion.

The point still remains that the XB1 version is running at a lower resolution and suffers from framerate drops. The developer chose to run the PS4 version at a higher resolution, which results in more framerate drops.

If you think this paints the XB1 in a positive light you're not being objective. The PS4 is also underpowered, as this game highlights, just not to the same degree.

Still the X1 is performing better and at times 50% better. They also released console patch 1.04 upcoming details and they are looking at even more performance and FPS improvements on the X1 (and PS4).

Great news for gamers. Would love to see how they could get some DX12 in there too.

My point and my quote and the article and the video stands. You can paint it in any light you like.

How are they going to make the Xbox One version better if it already sits at 30fps for the most part (Eurogamer's words)?

I think what you'll find is that the PS4 will get the same treatment the Xbox One got with the last patch and possible introduce a cap to it's framerate.

You will have to ask CD. I'm just glad they continue to fine tune both versions. They already addressed issues in PS4 version as well.
